UPDATE: This printer is a huge waste of money. It is constantly going off-line, completely stopped printing with my chromebook a few months ago, but we were able to print from our iphones, ipad and husbands old computer. Now, it will not print with any device. We have to unplug machine, reset everything, set it back up with wifi and then sometimes it prints, sometimes it doesn't until we power off or unplug and start all over again. The power button works when it feels like it, sometimes we have to unplug it to get it to go off so we can start all over again. All it is now is basically a copier, copying only things we put on the glass itself, that's it. I have totally had it with Brother products and I really hate their product help sites. It takes a very LONG time to get to what you are looking for. We will definitely be going with other brands for any future printing needs. Invest your money in a more expensive brand/printer, I will be.
OLD REVIEW: This review is for the "Printing" part of this model. I am currently trying to figure out the "scanning".
The wireless set up is VERY easy with an iphone/ipad. Both found the printer immediately and we were able to begin printing right away, it also worked on an older ipad. With our Mac Books, they needed a one time set up with the USB cord we had from our last printer. Once we connected the USB cord to the MacBooks, it was very easy set up from there. Setting up my Acer Chromebook took a little more work and research. I googled how to have it recognize the printer because it wasn't finding the new one, but after reading a few recommendations, I was able to connect to the printer with my Chromebook and was able to print quickly from it. It comes with a set up disc, but we only needed it for my husband's older laptop, all the rest of our devices connected without using it.
You need a little patience setting up and keying in passcodes and other info, it is not the one with the touchscreen and the cord could be slightly longer.
Print quality is nice and crisp, It's pretty quiet and doesn't throw off as much heat as our old Brother printer. We are pretty satisfied with this purchase so far. We also purchased the 3 year Protection Plan for just over $7.
As of right now, I am trying to figure out how to scan to the Chromebook, also, it doesn’t seem to be picking up on any of our laptops when we tried to scan to a file. We’ve got 5 different laptops, and the printer keeps saying “No Pc to Scan to”.
I CONTACTED BROTHER AND THEY ONLY OFFER SUPPORT FOR "PRINTING" WITH GOOGLE CLOUD PRINT, THEY SAID THEY DO NOT OFFER SUPPORT ON HOW TO SCAN TO A CHROMEBOOK. This is one of the reasons we purchased this printer, it sounded like it would be easy to use all functions with the Chromebook. Will update when we figure it out.
The second issue is that the toner cartridge that was sent with the printer barely printed 100 copies and had to be replaced.
Only one page at the time can be copied or scanned because there is no auto-feeder on this printer.
I would not recommend this printer to anybody for any kind of use.

So after spending 119 dollars + tax, you have to invest hundres of hours trying to install it, reinstall it and reinstal it again and again and again. Also you will need to constantly contacting the customer service, but bear in mind, the brother's customer service does have a working hour. They won't work no matter how urgent you need the printer to work.
Despite all of these troubles, don't you ever give up! Because from time to time, it can suddenly start working! And the next day when you power it up, it stops working again. So you will have to go back trying .....
For those who want to buy this printer, good luck for you!
I don't want to give this order even a partial of one star, but that's not a choice. I am still trying to make it work, I will
keep trying this * piece of *. But you know what, to certain point, amazon can it back. It's very close to that point now.
Installed from the provided CD and the software went online and installed/updated the supplied applications, this process took about 15 minutes. Plugged in the printer and the software then took care of the network setup flawlessly, it even updated the firmware to the current rev.
Huge 250 sheet capacity, duplex printing, 700 page starter cartridge, and crisp clean printing. What's not to like about this printer.
USB connection, click "add printer" - choose it - done
WiFi - I had to network settings choose the network i wanted and manually "type" the password... The password needs to be done with up-down arrows, literally the most time consuming of all... then all was done... All devices in the house can connect. Here's hoping you don't have a long wifi password.
The print quality is supreme for our purposes - printing speed is phenomenal.
We were afraid that after we had to abandon our beloved Samsung laser printer during move out East, we would never get such an affordable good LaerPrinter printer. We were wrong... It has exceeded our expectations for $CAD 119!
But still, most impressed by completely painless setup
- Prints greatly and wonderfully.
- Prints fast.
- It might be my older router, but I've been spending nightmare hours trying to install it wirelessly, without success. In the end, I just gave up and installed/set it with USB alone without any wireless settings. Thankfully, I had an old USB B type cord lying somewhere. USB installation is easy and takes only few seconds.
- It's quite loud when printing, but I can live with it.
after 200 pages or less toner needs changing. does not connect with wifi. contacted brother, no live person, you have to chat in text message style. with tech. support. a nightmare to deal with. I am sadly stuck with this useless product.
My initial print jobs (nothing too strenuous) have shown excellent quality and in comparison to the inkjet printer that it replaced, lightning-fast speed.
Copying quality and speed is on par and I have yet to use the scanner function.
The wifi set-up, however, was another story and definitely not easy.
I have a Chromebook and as a result, was unable to use the CD or the Mac/Windows downloadable drivers. The information provided pointed me to the Brother website where (to my surprise) the model number of this printer was not recognized for wifi setup which made the instructions virtually useless. Eventually, I found the answer in the Google settings/printer setup with Google Cloud Print and was able to register the printer there.
This would have been an initial 5-star review had I (and apparently others) not found the set-up instructions so inadequate.
The only complaint is that the Windows full driver is quite fancily bloated. During setup, it disabled my Internet wifi briefly so that it could establish itself as a wifi hotspot for the printer to connect to and automatically set itself up. What is a strange, fancily complicated thing to try. And it didn't work. So I had to set it up manually. Even if it had worked, I am not terribly fond of it shutting off my wifi and creating a wifi hotspot. That's a little weird. It should just let me choose my local wifi hotspot on the printer and connect via dhcp. That's probably what it did when I manually set it up (I forget). In terms of computer setup: My wife's mac auto-detected it and offered to install the correct printer driver and even had a photo of that exact printer. Windows needed me to manually install the correct driver. For Windows, the recommended huge, bloated install comes with a print-center which runs on startup and is able to receive or trigger scanning (in addition to printing). It works, though, and hasn't been buggy under my occasional use.
I tried printing on cardstock, but got very faint results. Has to do with needing more heat to fuse toner to heavier stock.
Scanner is dead slow over wireless, but okay with USB. I don't care for the scanning software - Canon's is better (or was 12 years ago when I last bought a Canon.)
Print speed is okay. Double-sided is much slower, but at least you're saving trees.
The good: it’s holds 250 sheets of paper and has an override slot for single sheets and envelopes. It’s fast, reliable, prints clearly. The scan software is easy to adjust and you can create a default output. The copy part works well. It’s not expensive.
The- depends on you: it’s bigger than I expected.
The terrible: if you’re working with prenumbered forms like cheques/checks or invoices this machine will drive you bananas. There is no way to have the cheques print in the correct order in your software unless you physically take your pile of cheques and put them in the machine backwards and in descending order- ie take 10 cheques- 90 goes on top upside down, then 91, 92...100. So you have to reorder your cheque’s before you put them in the machine. There is an print reverse setting but this is only good for output of Word-type documents so they print in page order.
So summary- a great printer if you never, ever have to print prenumbered forms. If that is your case, stay away. Far away.
- double-sided printing (no need to print one side and feed it back in to print the other side)
- large surface area for scanning
- WiFi connectivity
For more advanced features, like bulk-scanning documents, you're going to have to look elsewhere. But this printer has reliably met my needs for the past 1.5 years, and hasn't exhibited any problems yet. Additionally, now that it's been on the market for some time, it's easy to find good third-party printer cartridges in the event that you can't afford the genuine stuff (just look for TN760 compatible cartridges, just remember to check whether it comes with a chip or not).
