Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A lot of interesting and influential young people happened to land at Brown University over the years, and here, to honor its 250th anniversary, are “original pieces . . . recalling their college days” by some of the best and brightest, forming a tribute not just to Brown but also to individuals and groups, to lessons learned alone and together, and to steps taken, retraced, and gone past. Under such wider topics as “The Brown Aesthetic,” “Diversity,” “Self-Discovery,” “Inspiration,” and more, editor Sternlight gathers reminiscences and thoughts from such former students as Edwidge Danticat, Rick Moody, Lois Lowry, Susan Cheever, Ariel Sabar, Alfred Uhry, and Jeffrey Eugenides, who wax long and short, in essays, poetry, a syllabus, and even comics (e.g., Jeff Shesol’s three-page strip, “Escape from the Planet of the Apps”). So many found their lifework here; so many, too, found love. The lens of hindsight works its own peculiar magic throughout. Though Brown-specific, these contributions are also specific to learning, to making one’s way, and to growing up—“Well, more or less,” as Uhry notes, “I still haven’t managed to do that.” --Eloise Kinney
