5.0 out of 5 starsIf you are a Bruce Lee fan you will love this book. This is a book every martial artist would enjoy reading.
Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2015
As a lifetime student of numerous martial arts (Judo, wrestling, boxing, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Kenjutsu, Military combatives, Jeet Kune Do etc.), I was a Bruce Lee fan for many years. I have also read just about every book published on the late Bruce Lee and his own fighting expression of Jeet Kune Do. Like Bruce, I sought out numerous fitness activities which would make be a more efficient martial artist. When I saw this fantastic book (Bruce Lee: the art of expressing the human body compiled by John Little), for a bargain price I had to have it. It is one of the few books I have not read previously on Bruce Lee.

This short review cannot due this book justice. If you desire to know the various exercise routines and equipment Bruce used to become super fighting fit, this is a must read book. Interestingly, in my own search I used many of the same sources when I was training seriously in the martial arts. Bruce did not seek out a bodybuilder’s hugeness but his hard muscular body was focused on creating more power and speed in his techniques. He sought out exercise programs from a wide variety of systems.

Some of the many tools he used to build his strength and power include the following: Isometric (8 basic) exercises, barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells, circuit training routines, the Enter the Dragon routine for martial artists, abdominal exercises, forearm exercises, Bruce Lee’s top 7 exercises for the neck and shoulders, and his top exercises for building the chest, back, arms, legs and calves. He also had a routine when training with the heavy bag and numerous other exercise programs.

If you desire to understand what it takes to be the best you can be in any martial art, this book is for you. Bruce Lee understood clearly the essential fitness factors that go into any martial art training routine. This book in my opinion is a classic on the training methods of the late Bruce Lee.

3.0 out of 5 starsA bit too bloated, but okay.
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017
Overall, the main content of this book is solid. The author gives us a glimpse of Bruce Lee's training method and methodology, and I feel this book would be a valuable reference for anyone interested in martial arts, or fitness in general. As you may notice, I am rating this book as 3/5 stars. There are a couple reasons I am deducting 2 stars.

1. The author padded the book a bit too much. I found some of the motivations for each chapter to be too long-winded. Bruce Lee seemed to care a lot about efficiency, and the book isn't presented in an efficient way.
2. Having the lists of exercises and the descriptions of each is really nice. The pictures included have little-to-nothing to do with the exercises, however. It would be great to have some helpful figures/photos for each of the exercises (yes, I realize YouTube exists... but again, fancy pictures of Bruce Lee are not helpful at all, and simply add to the fluff.

In the 70's, we all wanted to be "just like Bruce Lee". Later on, I realized that impossibility. I also realized that the real goal was to find what it was that I wanted to pursue in life, and to be myself. That is what Bruce Lee did. He pursued that which he had a passion for...Hard, fast and continuously. This book by John Little tells us how Bruce Lee did it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to train like the best

This book had more than I imagined. I have the Tao of Jeet Kune Do, and while that book covers the philosophy of Lee's fighting method, this book goes into detail about how he actually trained his body. This book breaks it down, body group by body group, as well as insight on his training methods, his progressions, and his nutrition.

It's easy, with this book, to not only follow his regimen to a T (good luck with that. Lee trained 4-7 hours a day), but you can add portions of his workouts into your own. One of my favorite parts is that he began every day with stretching. It's a great way to begin each day with a sense of calm and a primer for your body. It's a fun habit to add to your daily fitness routine.

You wanna be the best, you gotta train like the best. And this book is the ultimate breakdown. If you're a Lee fan, this book is a must-have. The insight you gain into his daily life, his motivation, and his dedication is amazing.

This book is a fantastic overview of Bruce Lee's method for sculpting his body into a chiseled and extremely strong force to be reckoned with. Stretching is very important as there is an entire chapter dedicated to it. There are some unconventional methods, but most are just the good old fashioned basics which yield tremendous results when properly applied for anyone. His bag work is especially interesting since he made some ridiculous combos up that are a page long in some places. His incorporation of his martial skills into his workouts definitely lend greater progress if martial mastery is your goal. That being said, anyone looking to get in better shape will benefit from utilizing the methods in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative

It's common knowledge that Bruce Lee was an incredible martial artist and was very well versed in exercise science. What is incredible is just how surprising it is to learn exactly how he achieved his physique. Just by looking at him you can't help but wonder what sort of mysterious drugs he was taken, what chinese herbs he was putting in his drinks, etc. This book clears it all up - it was all just eating well and a lot of hard work. You can use this book as a guide through hard workout training, as motivation to improve physical fitness, or as a how-to for everyday healthy living. Regardless of what your intentions are, you will find a lot from this book. Highly recommended - especially for martial artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!!

This is one of the best "workout books" I've read. In detail, it lists which workouts Bruce Lee used to gain considerable size and strength, workouts he used to tone down, workouts to increase power, stretches, nutrition, and a few martial arts exercises. I am training to become a Navy SEAL and this book has helped me increase my forearm strength, balance, and flexability. Bruce Lee is truly amazing and worked very hard to be in the shape he was in. Full of never before seen photos. I only wished they illustrated how the workouts were done (step by step) but I eventually figured them out. This book is highly recommended.

This is a superb testament to a profoundly self-defined man, Bruce Lee, a complete original. In the detailed hand-written and hand-sketched logs that Lee constructed for transforming his body into a work of art, the reader can sense the very spirit of one who devoted his entire being, moment to moment, to making real a dream. And Bruce Lee certainly had more than one grand passion to realize in his short-lived 32 years.

I had found out about this book while looking up isometric exercises and circuit training techniques. As a HUGE Bruce Lee fan, I thought that this would be the perfect book for me. As it turns out, this is. Great historical documentation and insights. But, also some great perspectives and suggestions for your own personal fitness goals and routines.

Shipping was fast. The book is better than expected.

The book is very helpful and helps to motivate you and make a workout plan. It teaches you how Bruce Lee excercised in great detail. I have incorporated some of the workouts into my routine and I can feel myself getting stronger and faster. Even though I do boxing many of these workouts work great for it and Im sure it can work out for other sports as well.
