As a non-literature major with an average vocabulary, I found this audiobook to be very helpful and entertaining. Unfortunately, I believe the book turned me into a pretentious bunghole like the reviewer before me. I did not learn the word bunghole from this audiobook. I am so intelligent that I knew 'bunghole' years ago.

If you are a graduate in both English Literature and Written Composition, and have post-doctoral studies in linguistic and Romance languages, this book might not be for you. If however, you are like most average humans and speak the English Language on the 7th or 8th grade level, you could probably learn a thing or two from this read/listen. In all seriousness though, how many 6th graders are walking around complaining about their captious teachers, bellicose bullies, or getting into a donnybrook on the playground?

The passion that Professor Kevin Flanigan has for the English language is infectious and very enjoyable. Flanigan gives great background to each word, provides a clear definition of the each word, and offers fantastic suggestions on how to remember words. Little case studies and quizzes are used to help people remember. There are review sections to help refresh the listener on older words. I only wish that Flanigan spelled each word out to make it easier to visualize, but that is my only real criticism. Building a Better Vocabulary is educational and enriching. It's one of the best Great Courses!

This is a great book that will enrich your vocabulary. Please ignore arrogant postings of some English PhDs, who didn’t learn anything new from the book. ANYONE who spent 10,000 hours of detailed studying of ANY subject, would feel the same about a book meant for general public. On the bright side, lack of “accuracy” complaints from those same PhDs confirms that the book indeed is a great source of information for anyone without PhD in English.

It had a lot of good tips in it but following along with him was a bit difficult as the words were never spelled out and his enunciation of the words were poor at time. So listening in audiobook format made it a guessing game if you didn’t already know the word. Had a hard time finishing the book as this was pretty frustrating.

One of the greatest books you could read to expand your vocabulary. The professor kinda drills the words in your head in a very engaging way so that it makes it very hard to actually forget the words or their meanings. I wish I could find more books similar to this book to increase my English knowledge even more.
