Or so they thought. Allison and her handsome, charismatic husband, Doug, are on a Caribbean cruise to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. But the steady stream of idyllic photos and happy hashtags they post online is hiding a dangerous rift in their relationship. Allison has long suspected that Doug is having an affair. Despite his impassioned denials and smooth-talking alibis, she’s unconvinced of his innocence and determined to dig for the truth, no matter the cost.
And she’s not the only one delving into their secrets. The couple they’ve befriended on the cruise has been watching them. And they’ve come to a disturbing conclusion of their own. When Allison disappears the night before the ship docks back in Florida, they bring their terrifying suspicions to the police.
- An addictive thriller brimming with twists and a stunning conclusion! -

Indeed there are echoes of that classic 1940’s movie here, but Hinken adds many unexpected elements to the plot. So don’t assume you know it all at any point along the way.
Reading this story has the added advantage of making you feel as if you’re on a vacation cruise yourself. All the gourmet dining options will make your mouth water. You’ll inadvertently get a sense of both the fun and the phoniness of some of the excursions that are offered. Hinken gives a very realistic view of the day that passengers spend on land in Labadee, Haiti. It’s all about shopping and breezy diversions like zip-lining. The passengers don’t make any authentic contact with the people or the cultures of the places where they land. In fact, a little further research reveals that Labadee was a small village transformed into a completely purpose-built resort by one of the major cruise lines who now owns the acreage.
So the passengers on the liner are in an insular world, freed from all the messy lack of resolution found in the outside world. This is an ideal setting in which intrigue and suspense can flourish.
Another positive about this book is that it presents good character studies. Not everyone is villainous here as is true of so many “these mean streets” mysteries. There’s a realistic mix of the good and the bad. The character of Detective Mendoza who is introduced late in the book is especially appealing. The reader will be relieved to find that he has a keen intuition and is not given to taking things at face value. He would make a wonderful continuing character for Hinken to feature in future books.
So I recommend that you set sail on “The Cabin Below.” You won’t regret taking the trip.
The "ride" in this book is on a Caribbean cruise ship--the Diamond of the Waves--for a celebration of Doug and Allison Robinson's tenth wedding anniversary. I've never been on a cruise ship, so I enjoyed the immersive experience of fabulous dining, on-board entertainments, luxurious accommodations, on shore excursions in exotic locations, and lots of sunny relaxation.
But there's nothing relaxing about this cruise! Tension steadily mounts as Allison is swept into undercurrents of deception that make her question her own sanity, as well as the motives of the handsome man who professes to love her. It's a chilling tale of two men who are so obsessed with lust for the ship's enchanting singer that they'll do anything to possess her--including murder.
I'll go no further, because nothing should spoil your enjoyment of this exciting journey. Buy a boarding pass, start your voyage, and hold tight to the ship's railing through all the unexpected twists and turns ahead. Be sure to watch for that final big shock, or you might fall overboard! (Or drop your Kindle in the water).
As always, oceans of thanks to the author and her team for flawless editing and proofreading. This perfect cruise easily earns five stars and MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!
