PRAISE FOR BLOODLESS
"Leave it to the imaginations of Preston and Child... Spooky and surreal [and] wonderful fun."
"BLOODLESS is their 20th novel featuring one of the most unique protagonists in all of thriller fiction, Agent Aloysius Pendergast, and may rank as one of the finest books they have ever penned together.... BLOODLESS is a pure pleasure to read and is like candy to thriller fans --- candy from which readers will drain every ounce of flavor in pure delight."―BookReporter
“Bloodless is rife with inventive scenarios, amusing exchanges (especially between oft-impatient Coldmoon and eternally placid Pendergast) and tantalizingly spooky mysteries, topped off with a gloriously wild finale that is as action-packed as it is memorable.”―BookPage (Starred Review)
PRAISE FOR CROOKED RIVER
"Exciting. Nail-biting. Quality storytelling."―Publishers Weekly
"Preston and Child know how to craft compelling stories that are both baffling and surprising. The cast of characters feels authentic and moves the story forward in unexpected ways. . . the authors are masters of the procedural with a gothic flair."―Associated Press

I have always thought Constance was the most interesting of all the supporting characters in this series. While Bloodless, the preceding novel, gave us some insight into her mysterious background, this book tells her whole story and it's a good one. She remains the most interesting of the supporting cast.
Dr. Leng is a well drawn truly evil villain. He has a mind equal to or better than Pendergast and is able to manipulate all the players to unwittingly do or fall victim to his will. To tell too much more of the story would spoil the fun for those who have not yet read the book.
The Cabinet of Curiosities has always been my favorite of the Pendergast books and I didn't realize is the first in the Dr. Leng series. This book is the third of four in the Dr. Leng series with Bloodless being the second. The authors promise a quick release of the fourth and final book which I am anxiously awaiting. In the meantime I will reread the other two. There have been some highs and lows in the 21 Pendergast novels. The three in the Dr. Leng series have been the best, in my opinion, and I highly recommend reading them if you have not already.
But there was this, in the final pages: “He will not,” said a sudden, soft voice from the darkness, “be ready for me.”
My airy resolve to refuse to read the next book, being written “as fast as possible,” wobbled and collapsed with this teasing new twist. I am weak. No matter how irritated I am at present, I impatiently await the fourth book. While waiting, I will revisit The Cabinet of Curiosities, a long time favorite, and every other Pendergast book on my shelves. I am a fast reader. I hope Mr. Preston and Mr. Child are fast writers!
Special Agent Pendergast is one of the most fascinating characters in literature. His role in this book is a bit subdued for him, but I have great hopes for the final volume in the Leng quartet. Yes, it's frustrating to have to wait, but that ending!!! While I'm waiting for the next book to come out, I plan to re-read the book to pick up the rich details from 1880 New York that I rushed through in my mania to finish the book. The modern case involving Lakota artifacts is also absorbing. If you haven't read any of the other books in this series, read this one anyway! It will be a compelling read, and my bet is that you will go back and read the other Agent Pendergast books.
It essentially started as three different story lines. It was focused more on Coldmoon. And let’s be honest we’re not reading this book for him! I don’t even like his character. But he was less annoying this time. And that part of the story felt forced and unnecessary. Though his working with Vinnie added a bit of fun to the story. Vinnie’s character has grown too and is less of a caricature.
I enjoyed 1880’s New York. I understand they spoke different in that age. But the overuse of fancy words wore on me after a while. I consider myself an educated person. But I was constantly having to stop to look up the definition because context alone wasn’t enough for me.
The ending was a complete shock. I really didn’t see that coming. I hope they don’t tarry in getting the follow up book out!
