When you do this, you do have to remove the 5.25" drive bay door assembly so that you can get easier access to the hole which you must thread the cables. You need to thread the cable one port cable at a time, but there is enough room for two of these cables and the original drive cable without hindering the drive bay door after you reinstall it. I labeled the two cables A and B on both ends so I could keep them straight (you can't see behind the back plate so you can't trace the cables).
I also bought two ICY DOCK 4 x 2.5” HDD / SSD Bracket Mount Kit Adapter and installed them in the drive caddy and so now I can have 8 SSDs located there all connected to my RAID controller that has SATA 3 ports (6 Gbps) as opposed to the original SATA 2 ports (3 Gbps) on the Mac Pro. Of course this means you have no space for a 5.25" drive inside, but who burns BDs/DVDs/CDs much anymore, and I simply have an external BD/DVD/CD R/W drive and connect it to my Mac Pro when needed. This arrangement still lets me have the four original drive bays available for either more SSD/HD as I wish.
You still need to provide power to the 8 SSDs, so I bought two StarTech.com 4x SATA Power Splitter Adapter Cables (PYO4SATA) which can be made to connect to the original SATA + power drive connectors. You will need to do a little bit of trimming off some plastic on the male connector so it will fit. I found out not all of these SATA power splitter cables are made the same. I bought the Cable Matters (2 Pack) 15 Pin SATA to 4 SATA Power Splitter Cable and no matter how I tried to trim the plastic, the power connector on the original drive connector has a prong at both ends, and the prong is such that it catches on the base of the male connector so the connector will not go completely in.
I took off one star the port labeling on the cables are in the wrong order. The labeled "P1" SATA cable/connector is actually the P4 port, and the "P2" SATA cable/connector is the P3 port, etc. But this is easily remedied by making my own labels for the cables. I'm not sure how CableCreation could label them in the reverse order, or maybe there are two standards for the order of the SATA ports for mini-SAS connectors.
Cable thickness provide great flexibility and helps with the airflow to other motherboard components, since I have 4 intake fans on this chassis.
It is connected to a LSI 9211-8i HBA and so far, no SATA/SAS data errors. I'm very happy with the product.
I have another one of these in a different box and it hasn't failed yet after the same amount of time.
Once I oriented it correctly however, it works just fine.
Note that in my usage, my server was a 1U and so the connector would interfere with the closing of the chassis because it's decently long and sticks out, but since there's no room in the case for four more drives I just used it temporarily.
Not much to say really, it's a cable and does what it is supposed to do. The clips work well and each drive side cable is numbered. All for a cost that certainly will not break the bank.
