Editorial Reviews

Whatever you are currently reading during this time of social distancing, put it down and pick up It Calls From The Forest: An Anthology of Dark Tales from the Woods.Embrace a whole new level of isolation as you wander through the wild woods and twisted forests within this collection of short stories, brought to life by authors from all around the globe. Each tale is unique, exploring a new dark corner of the mind with a variety of creatures, spectres, and antagonists lurking in the shadows. It is clear from the anthology's start, "A Wail of a Tail" by Emma K. Leadly, that the collection pulls no punches in terms of gore, and indeed, the stories are rife with horrifying moments that incorporate blood, dismemberment, sacrifice, and mutilation in ways that are brutally satisfying to lovers of the horror genre. The depth of characterization and creativity within these tales elevates them beyond superficial shock and gore to achieve a horror that lingers. I don't often swear aloud when reading books, so when I reached the end of D.R. Smith's "The Thing in The Woods" (the second story in the collection) and uttered, "holy shit," I knew that I had stumbled upon a truly exciting anthology of short stories. ... There is something for everyone in this anthology, so seize the opportunity to stray from civilization and lose yourself within these pages.

About the Author

Tim Mendees is a horror writer born in Macclesfield in the North-West of England. He has recently been published in Twenty Twenty (Black Hare Press, ) Death and Butterflies (suicide House Publishing, ) Solitude (DBND Publishing, ) and has had several short stories accepted for publication in forthcoming anthologies and magazines. His debut novella 'Miracle Growth' is coming soon from Black Hare Press. Tim is an active and recognisable figure in the UK Goth scene in his role as DJ, promoter and podcaster. He currently lives in Brighton & Hove with his pet crab, Gerald, and an army of stuffed cephalopods.

After a 30-year hiatus, Mark recently gave up a lucrative career in sales to pursue his dream of being a writer. His passion and belief have resulted in pieces in many prestigious magazines, including Flash Fiction Magazine, Raconteur, Books N' Pieces, Artpost, Colp, Antipodean SF, Page & Spine, Twenty-Two Twenty-Eight, and Montreal Writes. His work has also appeared twice on The No Sleep Podcast and also on The Grey Rooms. Nine anthologies to date include his stories, two of which are on the 2019 Horror Writers Association recommended list, and a further eight anthologies set for imminent release in 2020 also contain his work. Mark resides in Melbourne, Australia with his wife and two children.

D. R. Smith lives in Livonia, NY with his wife and two children. He is a special education teacher in the Canandaigua City School District in Upstate New York. Ever since he was a boy, his haunted dreams have spurred him to write about the macabre. He loves a good horror story, especially ones that leave you wondering what horrors even the author was afraid to write. His favorite authors include Stephen King, Clive Barker, Ray Bradbury, and Neil Gaiman. He's published numerous short stories in Ezines and local magazines. He is the author of over a dozen books for teens and young readers, both horror and fantasy, and three writing guides for people of all ages.
