Editorial Reviews

Review

...RJ is the rebel hero who often speaks before he thinks, needing to apologize for offending others or hurting feelings with unfiltered comments. Finally, after RJ has made a number of hurtful comments to others, his parents have a talk with him about using his social filter...They encourage him to really think about his words and how they may impact others...RJ is given an example of a situation where he manages to use his social filter to make a slightly altered comment to a classmate that is upbeat and positive, instead of hurtful or negative. At the end of several more exciting positive comments that are turned around by use of the social filter, RJ is amazed at his success: "I can't believe I just said that, but it worked!" Additional tips are included for parents and educators to help reinforce the excellent suggestions of "I Can't Believe You Said That!" Perky, upbeat color cartoon illustrations show RJ learning from a variety of social commenting situations, keeping a fun, positive perspective. --Children's Book Watch, Midwest Book Review

RJ is such a relatable character. Nearly everyone has experienced a momentary lapse of their social filter! This book describes the connection between thoughts and appropriate social responses, using contexts that children have likely encountered themselves. A perfect resource to introduce children to the importance of social mindfulness. --Jill D. Kuzma, M.A., CCC-SLP

Julia Cook, M.S.

With millions of books in print, Julia Cook is a former school counselor and teacher who never dreamed she could evolve into a national award-winning children’s author, parenting expert, and inspirational speaker. She now travels the world encouraging students and educators to become lifelong problem solvers. “There are so many ideas out there that need to be shared!” says Julia, who takes top research and creatively translates it into “kid language” that is both entertaining and engaging. Julia has the innate ability to enter the worldview of a child through picture books, giving children both the “what to say” and the “how to say it.”

Several years ago, Julia was searching for an effective story to teach children about the differences between tattling and telling. When she couldn’t find the right resource, she decided to write her own book – A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue. Over a decade later, she has published bestselling books with the National Center for Youth Issues, Boys Town Press, and the CDC. Cook’s ultimate goal: make a positive difference in the lives of people both young and old by teaching lifelong problem-solving skills.

Julia has been endorsed by organizations including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Safe and Sound (a Sandy Hook initiative,) Childwatch of North America, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Childhelp, Darkness to Light, USA Volleyball, and The Alaska Department of Education. Cook’s research-based books have been referenced in outlets including Parent’s Magazine, The New Yorker, The Chicago Tribune, Military Spouse, Care.com, Yahoo.com, Drlaura.com, and Babyzone.com. She has also been featured on Hallmark Home and Family, CNN’s HLN News, and numerous metropolitan networks. She is the recipient of several book awards including The Association of Educational Publisher’s Distinguished Achievement Award, the National Parenting Seal of Approval, and The Mom’s Choice Award.

Julia frequently delivers entertaining and engaging keynote addresses at counseling, business and leadership, and character development conferences and has presented in thousands of schools both nationwide and internationally.

2.0 out of 5 stars Digital copy not worth the money!
By Amazon Customer on February 26, 2018
I think the story itself is good, but three pages didn't come through correctly and I can't read them at all. I can't even guess at what they say because the words and letters are all jumbled up. I'm very disappointed that I paid almost $10.00 for this digital copy and I can't even guess at what the three pages say. I had accidentally clicked on the digital copy instead of buying the regular copy and then couldn't reverse it. I clicked everywhere to try to figure it out because I didn't want a digital copy in the first place. I wish there was a way to get my money back!

1.0 out of 5 stars Will not be reading it to my kid
By Nicole Moriarty on May 30, 2017
I bought this for my 4 year old after he made a string of insensitive comments to strangers. However, this book would do WAY more harm than good! It shows a boy saying honest but mean things to people, and I just know it would give my son a whole new treasure trove of insults to draw from! And then the solution offered is SO convoluted and long-winded, for a child especially, but even for me!
Not sure if I should just throw it away...can't imagine this ever coming in handy.
