Great stories but characters have Fluency Disorder

I like the positivity and Bob's Get R Done attitude. Very creative. I do not get most of the US entertainment references but it does not matter. Unfortunately, I have to read too many sentences, over, deleting, the commas, because, they break, up, the flow to, the point I can't, follow the meaning. I have a friend who speaks that way. She is on the autism spectrum and was diagnosed with this Fluency Disorder. I know the author says he fights his editors on this because he wants it to sound the way he hears his characters speak. I suggest he either has a Fluency Disorder or he does not believe his readers have the ability to find the normal pauses in a sentence without tripping over giant arrows and flashing lights.

It is like listening to someone with a heavy stutter, for hours and, hours. Can't put down a person with a stutter because they can't help it, but I can and do put down these books.

Between the frayed comma splices, the faux pronoun and language errors (robots and Galactics talk like the hillbillies) and the lack of formatting (usually two spaces between every paragraph regardless of changes in time and space, no chapters, etc) I read until I'm so annoyed I have to stop for a few weeks. I'm putting this one down because I'm tired of all the bots fawning over Bob. Its too often. We get it! You're readers get it. We aren't stupid.

Once again Jerry Boyd proves why his books are so popular and we'll worth the time to read them. In this latest release our intrepid band of Ozark hillbillies, Okies, aliens, and bots set out to keep their end of the deal Bob made with the colonists that abandoned the colony ship Bob and Nikki discovered in the end of the Sol system. The crew end up running into one surprise after another as they try fulfill their obligation and uncover why the colonists choose to live in a real life Jurassic planet. The erstwhile colonists have a lot to hide and Bob and crew are determined to find out why. One mystery is not enough for the gang as more pop up. Bob learns more about the bots and their past, which leads to all sorts of questions. Slowly but surely Bob applies hillbilly know-how to figure things out and as usual surprises the aliens and bots who have viewed humans as backward and ignorant. One big mystery involving one of our favorite bots and some new ones set up a new adventure. There's a lot in the book as with each of the others and we'll worth the time to get lost in the worth Mr. Boyd has created.

OK, for pure enjoyment value, I should have rated this 5 stars. The stories in this series are very fast paced, written with a tongue-in-cheek perspective that is just plain fun. The stories don't examine the human condition in depth, and the characters are pretty simple, if appealing, and the aliens are anthropomorphic for the most part; the good guys are really good and kind, while the bad guys are (rather antiseptically) really bad. You just don't have to think about much while you're reading these books-- which is why I went with 4 stars. I usually enjoy books more along the lines of Neal Stevenson's, but have to say that these are really well written escapist things.

Bob just keeps getting in deeper and deeper in a most entertaining way. There are no chapters so I just have to keep turning pages to find out what happens on the next page, and if it wasn’t interesting I wouldn’t do that. I do have a few minor complaints though. For one thing Bob names everyone he meets and there are too many to remember who the are and what they do. One more thing is that Bob plans on giving his huge, totally remodeled space ship with everything you could possibly want to a Sasquatch woman. Makes no sense! He has the option to give her a fairly large freighter with room to carry a few fighter saucers to protect her people and their planet. Maybe it won’t happen though.

I read... a LOT. And books from all over the spectrum. This series (so far) is very different. Might be just me (and my wife) but this series just makes you feel good to read it. Its not a complicated story. Its not twisted. It just comes through. Solid characters, fun story, evil bad guys ;) Its a book that I can let my youngest read without worry. I mentioned in earlier reviews that I had found this series (and the author) on accident. After reading book 1 of Bob and Nikki, I immediately bought all 10 of the books. Seven books in, and loving it!

The amount of banter dropped a bit. The amount of Bob and Nikki time dropped. Snitz was more of an afterthought than the playful pup from the early books.

Sometimes its the little things you notice. The story takes the universe and adds to it with some well thought out and presented additions. The problem is that while the continuous adding to the wealth of characters we know and follow does avoid allowing the story to become mundane; the magic in this story has always been the core characters and they get a bit less attention than I felt they deserved.

Its still one of my favorite independently published series, so I give it a solid 4 stars.

Start from book 1 today. :)

Another excellent addition to the Bob and NIkki series! It's so nice to read stories that are entertaining, funny, and humble in their presentation. Character development and story arc are progressing nicely, with Bob growing into his role with every new book. An unintended consequence of Jerry's writing speed is that I am very disappointed if a new Bob and Nikki book isn't published by the 30 day mark after the last one hitting Amazon. Oh well, guess I'm forced to wait until the next one comes out (tapping foot impatiently!).

Once again, an excellent installment in the Bob and Nikki series. The irreverent, sarcastic humor and constant play on late 20th century culture along with fun, well thought out characters makes this a really fun read. Well worth the time and modest cost. I am looking forward to #8 as soon a Mr. Boyd can churn it out of his fertile, imaginative brain.

I have read all seven of the books in the Bob and Nikki series, and will probably continue to read new ones. They're light-hearted SF books, with a bit of homespun (American) philosophy.

My biggest problem with them is the lack of chapter (or any other) breaks. The action, in various forms, is non-stop from the beginning to the end, and I'm not saying that's a good thing. I would really like there to be a place to put the book aside for a while, and come back to it later.

The other problem I see is that everything that happens, happens very conveniently. Someone they’re looking for appears in a spaceship in the solar system our heroes just happen to be in. Someone has been saved from a nursing home who just happens to be related to someone else they come across in space. And so on.

Despite all this, I enjoy the books and will continue reading them.
