Emma is trying to raise awareness and money to support those less fortunate, and somehow gives the impression she is engaged to the Earl of Peyton, who is conveniently in America. Until he is not!
Peyton is intrigued when he enters the ball and hears of his "engagement" to Emma. What was he up to? Of course he had his secrets, but he really would not mind marrying her, making it real....
I cannot stress how much I loved this book! As many have said, this author is a definite must read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
The hero and heroine are a cute couple. As with the first book, the major conflict is internal with the heroine not wanting to give her heart to a man who she believes can never love her but intends to treat her as a weak possession. Her fears are well-grounded as the hero has roped himself off from those he cares about to protect them from his life as a spy. Plus he does not understand that women need more than protection.
While the romance builds slowly and with satisfying heat, I must say that even with the final resolution and implied HEA, I felt some discomfort that the heroine would ever get “all” of her hero. He did seem to be trying, especially with his sister, but he expected to keep his secret life as a spy mainly hidden. And not for nothing, given that he was the sole direct heir, his past and expected future participation in covert affairs makes him seem a little selfishly reckless. There are other ways to imperil those you love through risk taking other than immediate bodily harm.
This book started off funny and interesting, but as the book wore on, I really began to dislike the Heroine, Emma, and the rehashed jokes/witty sayings. By the end of the book, she met my definition of TSTL. She made me angry how wishy-washy she was towards Philip, also. She was doggedly tenacious on all she wanted changed and NOW! And why did she think she wanted Stanton the entire time of the book? Ick. When it got towards the end, they'd (her and Philip) already made love several times, and yet she was determined to end it with Philip without even connecting all the dots. Girl...did you even think you could be pregnant by Philip before you want to humiliate him before the entire ton? Ooof!
Contrasting her to Philip, who was near perfect. I mean, a spy, a secret hero/Superman/rescuer, and a man way ahead of his time to agree with Emma on everything she wanted in regards to social change. And then the ending was rushed and we didn't get to find out what happened to a few people. Very disappointed by the end of the book!
It was so good to see characters from the previous book. Watching Emma and Peyton circle each other was hilarious. I was outright laughing at times. So enjoyable!
Lady Emma made a silly remake to her friend Priscilla thinking no one was listening . Unfortunately, some Ladies heard them and started a rumor that now all of not only London but all of England thinks is true !! Instead of quickly stopping the rumor Emma uses it to help her Charity causes. Her friend Priscilla from book one tells her she needs to stop whatever one is talking about before it's too late. Then is too late and she is in such trouble....
Philip Fitzgerald, Earl of Peyton has many secrets and has been out of London for three months. At the first ball he attends after getting back he is shocked and confused by everyone congratulating him with smiles and wicks ???
What the heck is going on, he goes to his good friend, Bradenton to find out. He learns what Emma has let everyone thing ?? Now the fun really beginners. Instead of putting a stop to the betrothal they end up spending a lot of time
together trying (no to hard) to end it. This is a funny, witty, entertaining story. I loved the thoughts both have in their head and some that slip out... Both Emma and Phillp have many secrets and fears and its page turning to see what happens next. You don't want to miss this series of books. Both are great and I know I will be reading them again.

At one point I thought the book was set in an alternate reality. The era it is supposed to be set in is vague and unrealistic. Please just set the books in America. The books could also do with a good proof reader who understands English. It's really annoying to continually come across words used in the wrong context, for example, shined and treaded, instead of shone and trod. This sort of annoyance stops what little flow the story had.
I'm not sure if I can be bothered to read any more by this author, which as mentioned is a shame, as the blurb made the books seem somewhat interesting.
