That was the prompt for this edition of The Community Book Project. A group of 100+ contributing authors answered this question in 200 words or less. Their entries are gathered here. This book includes stories about living out loud (and on your own). There are tales of friends and flags and even one about online dating.
Take them in and think about this question, too: What does independence mean to you?

During the process I experienced:
+ Letting go of possessions
+ Transitioning relationships
+ Leaving and settling with great restrictions
+ Putting my experiences into a larger context
+ Considering what I want to be different in the future
I hope it will inspire you to embrace big endeavors regardless of the situation. May you take the opportunity of this unique time in our common history to reflect and create a post-pandemic life based on what you have experienced and learned.
The Miracle of the Christmas Ship – a true story from the past. You may never have heard of it.
In 1914, World War I was raging in Europe. One woman, Lilian Bell, desperately wanted to do something for Christmas for the children impacted by the loss or injury of their fathers. She had a brainstorm, an idea, a vision of what could happen one day in late August.
This is the story of how tens of thousands of individuals and hundreds of groups and organizations rallied to create and purchase gifts of toys, clothing and food – all in just ten weeks. Companies donated transportation and other support to make it possible for the ship to sail on November 14 in time to reach four ports of Europe before Christmas.
You will be inspired and amazed by this story. It’s one to share and discuss. A new Christmas classic.
