The Guild Wars seemed to be winding down…until you left Earth.

Jim Cartwright, commander of Cartwright’s Cavaliers and Minister of War for the Terran Federation, has been struggling with all the hats he has to wear. Merc commander, minister, and leader of Earth’s Raknar forces for their allies, the Dusman. The strain’s causing him…issues, and he decides to visit the surviving human colonies to get away for a bit.

What he finds isn’t what we was expecting, as he encounters the newest result of the Guild Wars - fighting between non-merc races. In the absence of Mercenary Guild contracts, many races have decided to fight it out themselves, and someone is happily supplying them with the weapons they need.

Meanwhile, Jim’s longtime friend, Splunk - or J’asa as she’s known to the Dusman - has returned to the 2nd Level Hyperspace home where the Dusman have spent the last 20,000 years hiding. She goes there to research more about the Raknar, hoping to find some answers for what’s happening to Jim.

What she finds is a plot within her own race’s leadership which will result in changes to her entire life, and not all for the better. It’s time for the Dusman to descend from 2nd Level Hyperspace and rejoin the rest of the galaxy.

The Guild Wars aren’t quite over yet, though, and there are still depths for civilization to sink further….

The Ending is Intense!

After reading Cartwright’s Cavaliers: Descent I think I may know who betrayed the Dusman. Read the book and see what you think about that subject. The ending of the novel is intense and highlights various relationships. The book covers Jim Cartwright going on a tour of some planets and Splunk returning home. Both have interesting adventures though Splunk’s may have more just a bit more intense. Cultural information about the Dusman is revealed during the story and I thought it was well developed and thought out. I have a back ground in cultural anthropology and always enjoy well developed and believable alien cultures. There may even be an invisible talking cat or two in this book. Read the novel and find out.

It's amazing how one novel from five years ago has managed to grow into something so huge and extraordinary. The total 4HU overall story has a richness and depth that few series manage develop and have. The authors have added yet more intrigue, wrinkles, twists, and turns all the while tying in and creating more layers with previous content. The character development, additional plot points, and pacing make for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. I can't recommend this highly enough. This is so much more enjoyable and easier to understand, if you start from the beginning. If you haven't read Cartwright's Cavaliers, you might want to start from there with it.

That is what landed him the job of “Minister of War” of the Terran Federation. Unfortunately, his fellow ministers are not necessarily cut from the same cloth… Jim’s adventures, as always, are a great read. Like all Four Horsemen Universe stories this is action packed, full of larger-than-life heroes and a very quick & fun read. If you read the “In the Wings” Anthology of Four Horsemen Universe Secondary Characters, there was a story titled “Friends with Benefits” by Mark Wandrey and Kacey Ezell. This book fills out the rest of that story and completes it. So, now you have to read this book AND that book! Well, get to it:->

The 4HU keeps on with a new fantastic story. I love the development of Jim and SPLUNK (not J'asa, she will always be SPLUNK to me)! The ending is a real surprise but the time skip between the last chapter and the epilogue has me wanting some sort of short story, actually another book to cover that interlude! ANYWAY ... LEAD THE WAY!!

Another excellent instalment in one of the most entertaining series of hard Sci-fi. If you’ve just started then you need to go right back to the Original Cartwright Cavaliers where it all started.
There’s plenty to get your teeth into as the story advances and pulls the plot threads together while revealing new ones.
You also need to read In the Wings which has another perspective of the last couple of chapters!

Lots Of Dussman Reveals

This entry covers 2 main characters. Jim on a ture of earth's colony worlds to help bring up their defences and Splunk, who returns to second level hyperspace to gather information. Both of them find themselves dealing with various factions and we learn a great deal. With the merc guild holding back contracts the non merc races are arming up and going out to settle accounts outside the norm. How much of this is managed chaos from the synthetic intelegences and how much is just natural is still to be learned. But the real reveals happen with the Dussman. We get a look at how they have survived, how their civilisation works, their internal politics and get hints on just who or what they have been faceing. Several questions I'd like answered, where did the Dussman send their arsenal? New Warsaw or out in the black somewhere? Will the Dussman and Depic get along? The scenes with those 2 species makes for great entertainment. What were the other species uplifted from earth? We know about the dolphins, I have my suspicions that the Depic were sourced from earth 20 thousand years ago, so what were the other 2 or was Jim just being messed with? So many questions. Looking forward to the answers.
