While wreckers search for valuables along the windswept Cornwall coast--known for its many shipwrecks but few survivors--Laura searches for clues to the lives lost so she can write letters to next of kin and return keepsakes to rightful owners. When a man is washed ashore after a wreck, Laura acts quickly to protect him from a local smuggler determined to destroy him.
As Laura and a neighbor care for the survivor, they discover he has curious wounds and, although he speaks in careful, educated English, his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Despite the evidence against him, the mysterious man might provide her only chance to discover the truth about her parents' fate. With danger pursuing them from every side, and an unexpected attraction growing between them, will Laura ever find the answers she seeks?

About the Setting
The novel is set on the coast of North Cornwall in the villages of Trebetherick and Rock, as well as the larger town of Padstow across the Camel Estuary. I have been to Cornwall a few times before, although not to this particular area. My husband and I planned to travel there in early 2020, but were unable to. Thankfully, a local guide (Elite Duchy Tours) was willing to review the manuscript and take photos for me. I enjoyed researching the history and traditions of this region, and hope readers will enjoy traveling there in the pages of A Castaway in Cornwall.

One of the reasons I chose to set the novel on the North Cornwall coast was because it is an area known for shipwrecks, some say second only to the Lizard Peninsula in the south of Cornwall. In fact, this stretch of coastline is sometimes referred to as “The Lizard of the North.” To this day, you can see the remains of shipwrecks along the shore. |
My husband took this photo when we visited the historic Charlestown Harbour (a Poldark filming location) on the south coast of Cornwall, as well as the nearby Shipwreck Treasure Museum. In the novel, the heroine, Laura Callaway, collects things washed ashore after shipwrecks and endeavors to return them to loved ones. Viewing the museum’s collection of artifacts helped inspire Laura’s collection of “treasures.” |
For centuries, the ancient church of St. Enodoc near Trebetherick, Cornwall, was half-buried by sand. The local vicar was still required to host services there once a year, so he would descend into the church through a hole in the roof. In the novel, Laura’s uncle is the parish vicar, and St. Enodoc is the setting of a pivotal scene. |

From the Back Cover
Set adrift on the tides of fate by the deaths of her parents and left wanting answers, Laura Callaway now lives with her uncle and his disapproving wife in North Cornwall. There she feels like a castaway, always viewed as an outsider even as she yearns to belong.

"Klassen delights with a winsome love story between an orphaned young woman living on the coast of North Cornwall, England, in 1813 and the shipwreck survivor she nurses back to health. . . . Klassen steeps their romance in atmosphere and intrigue. The result is an entertaining and satisfying romance."--Publishers Weekly

This book is a well-researched, flawlessly written story of a young woman who finds herself nearly as shipwrecked as the many poor seafarers who are beaten by the notorious Cornish coast. She saves a victim of a shipwreck and helps nurse him back to health. There is much speculation about him, as well.As another mysterious survivor from the same wreck.
The story includes much about the will of God in life, and includes a sweet romance. There is nothing one cannot guess from the first few chapters, but we don't have favorite sweaters because we want something exotic, do we??
Another solid Klassen winner.
