I don't know that I have enough beautiful words for this story. Just looking at the cover, I knew I would like it, but I'm happy to report I loved Caterpillar Summer even more than I can say. When I wasn't marveling over the too-adorable Cat and Chicken cartoons, I was swept up in the setting and McDunn's heartwarming characters. The relationship between Macon and Cat was a particular favorite, and there were moments of such simple, perfectly-executed poignancy, I found myself catching my breath. This book should be in every beach-lovers hands--young and old.
From the first sentence this beautifully written book weaves a tale of love and family. Cat takes care of her brother, Chicken, but a summer with her estranged grandparents changes her perspective on what selfless love really is. I loved this book so much—it was sensitive, thoughtful, and beautiful. So enjoyable!!
Families are made up of all shapes ,sizes, and colors but what is always important to remember is they belong in your book of memories. Follow Cat as she discover her grandparents and heals old wounds that bring Cat, Chicken, and her mother a new beginning.
Absolutely loved this story. It runs the gamut of all emotions. Growing up in a family where loss occurs and changes your plans is challenging. Sometimes it takes one little caterpillar to make a difference.
Beautifully written, sweet yet sophisticated, Caterpillar Summer is an engaging story about Cat, a responsible big sister who puts others needs first. Seeing Cat grow and learn that it’s ok to acknowledge herself is a poignant lesson we can all benefit from, especially tweens who are learning to find their own voices. The beautiful setting and lovable characters will draw you in and root for Cat. Perfect read for middle grades. Perfect setting for a summer read. McDunn’s style is thoughtful and endearing. I am hopeful for more Cat and Chicken adventures.
I’m not super prolific with book recs online. I stumbled upon this title looking for a cheap kindle book to buy while I waited for a couple to come in from the public library. SO GLAD! It was simply wonderful. I have already ordered two copies for my school library. Grades 3+
From the first page of Caterpillar Summer, I was transported into the heart of a young girl named Caterpillar and the relationship she has with her younger brother affectionately known as "Chicken". The story is multi leveled and touches on family, responsibility, forgiveness and most of all love. This is a must read for young and old alike! Ms. McDunn is a phenomenal author and writes in such a beautiful manner-I cannot wait to read her next book!!
