Russell R. James was raised on Long Island, New York and spent too much time watching Chiller, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and Dark Shadows, despite his parents' warnings. Bookshelves full of Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe didn't make things better. He graduated from Cornell University and the University of Central Florida.

After flying helicopters with the U.S. Army and a career as a technical writer, he now spins twisted tales best read in daylight, including horror thrillers Dark Inspiration, Q Island, and The Playing Card Killer. This was a fast-paced short book that reminded me of the monster movies I watched when I was a kid. To me it's kind of a cross between "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" and "Bats" (a movie starring Lou Diamond Phillips from back in the late 1990s).

Paleontologist Dr. Grant Coleman, broke and without a job, is talked into going to Montana by a shady film producer/director and ends up being trapped in an ancient cavern with the film crew and a National Park Service ranger from Yellowstone National Park. And what they find in the caves (or what finds them) is what makes up this story.

It's a fun, unbelievable tale that is a way to pass a couple of hours.

What can I say? I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting which is very rare for me since i take my time reading a book.

The book is very well written with the science very well blended into the story. The science is gradually explained as the discoveries are made and the science is explained in a conversational manner. The story is very believable as it does not include any alien monsters from another world or from the "spirit world."

An entertaining character, no pun intended, is the film making director who is constantly trying to somehow capitalize on every accident and every hazard!

If you like adventure/exploration stories with a lot of danger and a "what will happen next?!" theme, then this is a book you must read.

I read Cavern of the Damned on kindle unlimited, enjoyed it so much I immediately bought the paperback for my collection. Don't expect depth to the characters, story, or science, and like one person mentioned I do think a couple action scenes kind of lacked visceral impact. However, overall it's very entertaining, the does a great job of keeping things moving, and the book never tries to be something it's not. By the end of it I felt I'd been on an adventure somewhere, one filled with monsters, it was a great little escape for me. I look forward to exploring more of the author's works. The paperback looks great, too, wraparound cover with cool artwork. I love it.

I loved this book. The author builds a great atmosphere, and I like how he just get's to the point of everything...creatures that would make you crap your pants. With all of the series out there, and 700 page operas, it's nice to have a story where things just go to hell for the characters, and we're not concerned with the physics or possibility of these creatures even existing. I'm not one that worries about how "realistic" something it...if I was, I'd read nonfiction! I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading another!

There is a lot of action and the author does not shy away from killing off the characters, similar to Stephen King and Deann Koontz when they wrote horror. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in one evening. I enjoy books about paleontologists and archeologists who are determined to go where they should not be. This is a little reminiscent of Preston and Child. I highly recommend this book and am hoping the author will write more like it!

This is the first in a series of books featuring Grant Coleman, an "anti-hero" (but loveable guy), who is a paleontologist, and B-movie creatures. Fast paced, entertaining action and suspense. I've read all of the books so far and loving them. (NOTE - Even though I call these a series, each book can stand alone and they don't have to be read in any particular order). Russ James is one of my favorite authors and this book, along with the Q Island books, are my favorites of his.
