Humanity excels in finding ever creative ways to murder....
Car bombings as a means for murder was unheard of, unprecedented, and as far as Henri Davenforth knows, only one person in the entire world had ever seen the like before: his partner, the Shinigami Detective.
The case is transferred to them, because this one calls for Jamie’s skills. But it turns out that not everything is as it appears on the surface. What should have been a straightforward murder, might have some very murky motives behind it, and the further that the two investigate, the stranger the case becomes.
Now the Royal Mage of Kingston is involved, as well as the Kingsmen, bad charms are flying about, and the situation’s going from bad to worse. Their two murder victims created some bad magic, and it’s spreading like a disease throughout the city, killing other people in its wake. Henri’s desperate to track it down, to end it. He’s afraid that if they don’t react fast enough, even more death and explosions will follow in short order.
And thousands will die in the aftermath.

There is a clever conceit at the heart of this series, in that the books are journals/reports written by Henri, one of the two main characters. Margin notes are hand written in the journal first by Jamie, the second main character and then by Sherard, an important secondary character, then answered/rebutted/complained about by Henri. Great fun. Later, journal pages are added by Jamie to flesh out the narrative. The two main characters have clearly distinct POV voices; and are both believable, relatable and interesting. No super-powered alpha females (which is not to say Jamie can't kick ass) battling wills with uber hot super-powered alpha males on the inevitable route to... And that's a big plus. However... Deities and devils both live in the details, and both books fail here on several fronts. First, internal consistency: these hand-written margin notes from Jamie seem rather odd in light of the fact that she can neither read nor write the language well. Does anyone other than me see the problem here? There are other consistency issues, but I won't belabor the point. Second, editing: or rather the lack thereof -- misspelled words, correctly spelled but wrong in context words (e.g. regulated when it should been relegated), and incorrect grammar. Please, Honor, look up the rules for conjoined personal pronouns. Third, laziness: this sort of plot begs for a bit of world building. Instead, Jamie gets plopped down in early 20th century London, complete with what Americans quaintly believe to be English idioms of the time. But with magic. Magic makes it all different, right? Finally, disregard for facts: one plot element revolved around magic mushrooms. OK, I get it -- wink, nod. But these mushrooms needed to be harvested as seedlings. Mushrooms do not, have never, and will never have seedlings. Any ninth grade biology textbook will make that clear. I will not even start with the conception of infection diseases set forth... Final evaluation: great promise unfulfilled. 2.5 stars.
What killed the book for me, totally distracted me and interrupted the flow, was the lack of editing. After the third or fourth misuse of the word "amiable," for instance, I started grinding my teeth. I am pretty sure the writer meant that a character was "amenable" to a change or idea. I can stand casual grammatical errors and a one-off malapropism, but for pity's sake, if you are going to use a word over and over, LOOK IT UP AND GET IT RIGHT.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which is the best of the three in this series, and fantasy lovers, this book features more magic than police procedural. Strong character development continues, with focus on Magic Examiner Henri Davenforth, his family, and Royal Mage Sherard.
Detective Jaime Edwards, former FBI agent from Earth, is approaching an ominous anniversary—one that has Davenport, Sherard, and the Kingsmen in helicopter-brothering mode. Jaime’s talking purple cat, Clint Barton, is her comforting cuddler when she has nightmares. Clint is a joy to read about—although Jaime does warn in caps to NOT give him liquor or sugar water. NEVER AGAIN. Plus, per Jaime: ‘“The song that never ends” is hereby BANNED from this house. Clint SANG IT FOR THREE HOURS STRAIGHT.’
In this time of COVID-19, I suggest readers take any science information in this book—medicine, biology, mycology, pathophysiology, etc.—with a heaping cup of salt. I enjoy the author’s work, but she really needed a good editor, a high school biology teacher, and a medical practitioner to check her “facts.”

If Ms Raconteur reads these I'd love to see a prequel about the Belladonna era and how it led to the Shinigami Detective arriving (what made such a powerful nutjob want a bodyguard?) Please!
