Unfortunately, it was all wasted in the last third of this finale.
Pro-tip: time travel as a device to resolve plots is categorically lazy writing. If you can't write your way back out of a plot you spun without it, then your literary reach has exceeded your grasp.
If you're invested in the series, read this book for what closure it provides.
Beyond that, I'm done reading this author for the foreseeable future.
This series has become the standard for writing books about magical schools. And yet, few I've read which attempt to follow in these footsteps come quite up to this standard. Complain if you like, disparage magical time travel as lazy writing if you like, but the fact is, the intricacy, the detail, the character building, the sheer SCOPE of this series is doggone hard to top.
I heartily recommend this book, and the entire series to you for your consideration. I know, 24 books is a considerable investment, but in the end, I believe it is well worth the effort, much less the money.
Thank you, Chris, for entertaining us all so well!
Kingdoms were good, but empires were bad and doomed to fail (despite Rome lasting at least six hundred years, Byzantium over a thousand, and numerous Chinese dynasties lasting centuries); Emily and her friends were good when they overthrew Kings and evil sorcerers, yet Void trying to do the same was bad; the main character valued loyalty, then betrayed her own master and foster father; the author developed the main character and sorcery at a glacial pace, while she introduced modern reading, writing, accounting, and scientific concepts that spread throughout the world in 5-6 years..I loved the first 20 books--and could have skipped the rest--still, I'd give the series a 4/5, but the final book wraps the contradictions up well and deserves a 5/5.
There actually is a fair amount of reading after the story ends, which I found interesting. And then after everything else is said and done, he introduces a new character from an upcoming book. The characters name is Adam, who has no magic, and he sucked me right into his next story in the upcoming book entitled "The Cunning Man". And once again I find myself anxiously awaiting the release of his next book!
Well done Christopher! Now please hurry and release that next book.
Chris did a good job of having a character fighting a more powerful character and winning.
Now Emily has the job of helping clean up the mess that her well-meaning former master (Void) made.
I'm hoping that Chris will return soon to this universe. [Grin]

The latest book gives us an excellent conclusion to all the storylines but leaves behind a fully functional world of magic just waiting for new tales. A good book that I have just read in one sitting, couldn’t stop until I knew what happens.
If you're looking for a GoT, Lord of the Rings or the next Harry Potter, this isn't it. However it is worth the read.
