This book is wonderful for a getting a little kid started with Chinese characters. It is first and foremost a coloring book, and can be enjoyed purely as such. All the exercises are geared towards getting familiarity with the shapes and building associations with their English meanings. Pinyin pronunciations are introduced for each character, but they are not necessary to complete the exercises.
Since getting it Christmas day, my little one has worked through half of the book. She recognizes everything she's seen so far by its English equivalent, and the book covers 36 basic characters. I will definitely be ordering the follow up volume.
If you want to ease your child into learning Chinese characters, and build their interest, this is a great tool. Nothing about this book will frustrate a little kid or parent.
