Self-indulgent garbage. This is a self-published e-book of crappy blog posts.
Let me save you time and money: he regurgitated the typical mind, body, and soul approach of taking care of yourself without going into any detail. Financial freedom will bring you happiness. Introduce two people you know that can benefit from each other to build your network. Make a list of your likes, dreams, and goals. Now make your own job related to that list because cubicle life is for suckers and those jobs will continue to disappear because companies don't care about you. Also, don't go to college.
Congrats, you just read this book.
Here is how it goes. First, the guy is a jerk. "You might ask, what if you have a job? Get rid of it. You ultimately don't need it. You ultimately willl be pushed out of it."
I am the type of person that likes to finish what I start, like books. The one piece of advice I'll take from this book is "only do the things that make you happy," which would be to stop reading this awful book.
I would like to get my money back as this was a waste!
Overall, I appreciate this book. It came at a good time. I had just previously read a "self-help" book that was just atrociously written and incomprehensible. It was a wonderful pick-me-up to read a book that is plain as the light of day. There are a lot of actionable items, do yourself a favor and highlight and bookmark the bits that you want to work on. My wife and I now hug every morning before she goes to work for a boost of oxytocin. I'm glad he wrote that section, because as simple and obvious as it is, I had never heard anything about increasing your oxytocin before.
Lastly, I appreciate the giveaway Kindle price. It's always hit or miss with self-help books, because most of the items are not tailored to your situation, but this book hits many nails on their head, and it does not take itself too seriously by claiming to change your life drastically and instantly, like some gurus claim.
I've been struggling for nearly 20 years to make writing my full-time gig and I believe this book has given me the tools that will allow me to finally take the leap. I had learned some of the lessons already, the hard way. I've worked for corporate America for decades and have witnessed many of the changes outlined in the book unfolding. The last few years I've felt as though it was a race against time to get my writing career off the ground before my position was outsourced or the job became so demanding due to staff downsizing that it was unbearable. I always say, "If you don't think outside of the box you will get stuck inside a cubicle." I've been knocked down countless times but have never given up on my dream.
Protect Yourself would be a good alternate title. This book is a must read for anyone in the workforce who wants to successfully navigate the changes that are already well underway.
Choose Yourself has not only renewed my hope but it's changed the way I think. This is powerful stuff if you're ready for it.
The book does something else as well- it offers a vision of a hopeful future for those alert enough to read the tea leaves. So far, it doesn't look like the jobs are coming back to America, which means that we will all need to invent new ways to create value and earn a living in our new economic landscape. His ideas are not new. The United States was founded by individuals who saw a need and figured out how to fill it. I believe he is completely correct that we have entered the CHOOSE YOURSELF era and he offers his ideas to navigate this new financial terrain. Even if the reader has a good job now, the information in the book offers the reader a tangible process to navigate their career in the business world. Well worth the read.
My personal high point of the book was when I read, "I am grateful." He goes on to describe the tremendous power of practicing gratitude on a daily basis. Failing at almost everything myself, I've learned to be grateful for everything as well. My Altucher's words on gratitude were affirming and comforting. Most good book will teach you something. A great book will reach out, grab your heart, and infuse it with new blood and new life. "CHOOSE YOURSELF" is that kind of book!

However this one stands out.
I first heard about Altucher through a dear friend of mine. Reading one of his older books pushed me to self-publish too and I am thankful for that.
The content of the blog is brilliant.
The podcast is awesome.
This book is also great.
This does not pretend to be a self-help book. Don't read it with that in mind. It's not. It can be whatever you want it/need it to be.
For me right now, the most important takeaway is that you have to literally choose yourself, believe in yourself and just try something that keeps nagging you in the form of an idea. In a recent scifi book (Joe Haldeman's Peace and War) - I read sth along the lines of 'do something, even if it's wrong', meaning that bad choices sometimes are better than doing jack shit.
You have to flex your muscles, move, try, attempt - it is a trial and error approach and if you fail, you fail - but at least you have tried.
I simply love the humility and honesty of the author's approach, combined with the informal way of writing. Things stick because they are explained in an easy matter of fact way.
Basically, read this book, watch Rocky III and then Rocky IV and you are going to be hyped out of your mind.
Great stuff, will re-read.

The low Kindle prices is just fantastic, and the author is both generous and has an astute understanding of the human condition, with all its frailties, foibles, successes, and failures. I like the author as a person, even though I may not agree with all that he suggests. He has my respect and admiration.
Who is this guide for? Any fair minded adult in today's complex world would benefit much it's wisdom. A great find! An essential reference to read repeatedly, refer to, and consider applying its ideas in your life - whatever your age.

It has affected me significantly - I want to set up a group between friends to help ourselves to get better at 'the practice' in the book...
Also, James offers to give the price of the book back to who can prove they bought the book :)
I have no intention of doing that. This is a great book.
