the dense story, the way in which it’s told, the performances, cinematography… it’s a memorable and timeless film. nothing pretentious about it. it’s just high quality. if you enjoy junk food movies that you don’t have to engage with, that’s okay. having unrefined taste in film does not justify spouting off about classics like your opinion has any merit

The packaging of the new Criterion UHD-4K "Citizen Kane" is simply terrible. The slip-cover fits so tightly over the inner-contents that it is almost impossible to reassemble. There is a booklet inside, which is pretty useless and redundant (everyone is aware by now of why Citizen Kane is a great and important movie). But what really sucks is that the inner-card-board folds out in four quadrants (north, south, east and west). Inside each foldout is a sleeve that holds a disk. UHD-4K disks are EXTREMELY sensitive to smudges and scratches, and packaging these disks like this causes the user to finger the surface of the disks to extract them from the sleeves - a great way to scratch the disk face or get finger-oils on the surface, making the disk skip or be unplayable after a time. C'mon Criterion, stop with the artsy-fartsy ridiculous packaging and ensure disk integrity with much more practical packaging. This release should have seen a much more sensible and attractive steelbook.

Citizen Kane is wonderful and looks great on UHD ... no problem there.
However; the accompanying blu-ray is incorrectly mastered and defective. I had to destroy it and email an image of it to Criterion just to start an eventual replacement who knows when ... I'm an international customer so at least I didn't have to mail it back to the USA!
Amazon had, of course, yet again mailed my disc package in a plastic bag that offers zero impact protection and of course my package has impact damage. They do this EVERY time I import to the UK DESPITE me choosing the most expensive shipping option and complaining vigorously about their pathetic excuse for packaging: use a BOX!!
Finally; the disc package itself is rubbish. It's made of very cheap card, the slip-cover barely fits and the discs are extremely difficult to extract because of how they are located in the foldout sides of the cardboard unit; the way its been done will also lead to scratches. Whoever designed this is an idiot frankly; it's neither attractive or functional.

The manufacturer (Criterion) shipped this release with defective blu-ray discs, which become unwatchable at around the 30 minute mark. The manufacturer released a report detailing the issue with this new release on their website (Nov. 24th 2021), and are setting up an exchange program to replace the discs at some time in the future. I recommend waiting to purchase this until the manufacturer has corrected the defect.

Early shipments of this set have a faulty Blu-Ray disc, on which contrast goes bad 30 minutes into the film and continues to the end. Criterion is rushing revised discs to early purchasers but it's going to be something of a mess getting the disc replaced. Other discs in the set, including the 4K, seem to be OK.

Can't wait to own this in 4K, I don't get buying this disc only to leave a bad review. If you don't like CK than why did you buy this and leave a bad review? Is $55 steep for a 4k movie? Yeah it's not the best, but this is Criterion's first wave of 4k movies and they are going to release some jewels that deserve 4k releases so I'm overall happy with this purchase and find the premium price tag to be fair enough.

As a motion picture it doesn't get any better than Citizen Kane... Not only did Welles co-write and direct but he starred in a movie that, when he was in his mid-twenties, he played a character of all ages, and in one scene he plays an old man with narrowed, lusty eyes at a young woman who was older than Orson when it was filmed and, he's not an underrated filmmaker but he IS an underrated actor, and for the actor, Orson Welles, you cannot do any better...
As for the tragedy of Criterion not only making a terribly boring cover, which is so not like them... the Blu Ray, as shown above, is defective and this really shouldn't even be for sale here. I wasted my time and had to send it back, but... I AM A VERIFIED buyer...
Also, the biggest flaw with the packaging is, you have to pinch your thumb and finger to get the discs out, and in doing so the Cardboard (not the regular tough protective Clamshell) gets wrecked and bends every time you take a disc out, and that's... kind of important when you pay so much for a Blu Ray in order to, you know, view it.
Attached is the notice from the Criterion Website basically telling you, you bought an Edsel, and you need to break your Edsel to buy another... Edsel...

I should preface this review by saying Citizen Kane is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. When Criterion announced a 4K transfer of the film, I was overjoyed. And in terms of the 4K transfer, it looks absolutely fantastic. Definitely the best I’ve ever seen the movie in a home theatre setting.
The Blu Ray however is defective, and Criterion is offering a trade-in program. You have to either send in your disc, or send them a photo of your blu ray destroyed and they’ll send you a new one. The color correction is apparently off. Don’t they have people that like…watch these products before sending them out? Like don’t they get a test pressing from the plant?
My biggest gripe with this release is the terrible packaging it comes in. It comes in a cardboard foldout box that looks like it’s going to last me another 4 months. The corner was already bent in upon arrival, which I chalk up to Amazon delivery. But like, this box sucks. It’s also bigger than the standard Criterion box, so it sticks out like a sore thumb on my shelf. Maybe other people will be stoked on this. I hate it.
There’s a few new special features on this which I’m excited to dive into which haven’t been available on any other release of the film. Anyway. Ten out of ten movie, three out of five package.

A masterpiece with technical issues

I received the 4k/blu ray combo set today. The packaging is beautiful. Unfortunately I found it difficult to remove the blu rays from the tight cardboard sleeves without grasping both sides and leaving fingerprints. Unfortunately, Criterion has issued a statement regarding the BluRay disk (1):
which is partially quoted below. In response to another review which stated that you need to return them defective disc to criterion for replacement, that is no longer true. It is one of 2 options. The other option is : 1. Break or cut the disc in half. Then take a photo of the unplayable disc, with your name and the date written on a slip of paper included in the image, and email the photo to orders@criterion.com. Be sure to include a mailing address that will be valid for the next 1-2 months in the body of the message. Please use “CITIZEN KANE BD REPLACEMENT” as the subject line.
“We discovered this weekend that there is a problem with Blu-ray disc 1 in all of our Citizen Kane editions that affects the contrast in the feature film, starting around the 30-minute mark and lasting until the end of the film. The 4K UHD disc is not affected. We are in the process of manufacturing corrected copies and will be making replacements available to all of our customers. We hope to have replacement discs ready to ship before the end of the year.”
You can get additional information from their website.
In addition I ran into an issue with my 4k disc. Hopefully, this issue is a “one off” situation. When I removed the disk from the case and inserted into my Panasonic UB-820 4k player, a message appeared on my screen saying that the disc wasn't compatible. I removed the disc and noticed some finger prints on the disc that I removed with a soft cloth. The disc then started correctly. As mentioned earlier, the packaging of the set is beautiful, but a significant negative is that I found it almost impossible to remove any of the 4 discs without grasping both sides and leaving fingerprints. The 4k blu ray played flawlessly up until approximately 46 or 47 minutes into the film. Then it began stuttering and jerking and then just froze. I tried to play the disc again, and the problem recurred in the same spot.
I’ve since returned the disc to Amazon. Needless to say, I am very disappointed; I’ve never experienced anything like this on a Criterion product. Hopefully they will resolve these issues.

This Criterion release should be recalled immediately.

[DISCLAIMER: THIS IS FOR THE CRITERION RELEASE, NOT THE MOVIE ITSELF]
Preordered this before release day (a good movie for the record) and I hadn’t opened it yet when it came. But as soon as I heard about the problems with this release (thanks to very informative reviews here on this website) regarding the Blu-Ray disc, I decided to get a refund and wait until Criterion either fixes the issue or just recalls their product altogether with better discs and new, better packaging that don’t have discs stored in sleeves that’ll most likely damage discs every time you try and take them out according to a reviewer on this website. Sorry, but I’ll take the packaging for both Criterion releases of Night of the Living Dead and Parasite any day over the packaging for this release.
Why didn’t Criterion just delay this release until they put our better packaging or fixed the Blu-Ray issue?
One minor problem I had with my copy? Despite not opening my unopened copy, I found a few small tears in the plastic wrapping. This is Criterion, I had expected much better than this. Don’t know what the reviews are for the other Criterion 4K UHD release of Menace II Society, but I’ll bet it’s having a field day compared to this. Bottom line, avoid this release until Criterion gets their act together.
