Faux Noir Not Film Noir But worth a watch (Originally called Hotel Noir (c) 2012)

City of Sin (2016) was well on its was to being great modernization of the detective getting pulled in over their head by the startling damsel in distress who turns into the femme fatale. Malin Akerman delivers what should be the introduction of a Femme Fatale extraordinaire. She knows her charms distract the man and Rufus Sewell delivers a detective not quite as smart as his ambitions well. The narration from Danny DeVito almost pulls together a story line. And if we take it as the narrated story it is worth a watch as Carla Gugino's sultry lounge singer with a heart of almost gold gives us somebody to cheer for even when we are not sure where she is going. So for a while we really had the makings of a five star noir with elements laid out almost to well. But by the end, we find faux noir in an unexpected and disconnected double cross and an even more out of place car accident eliminating that ending. I liked it even through the long drawn out parts for all but the last couple minutes and then they lost at least a star and half. The closure here was almost to opposite of the details laid out. I guess that is why this has been packaged twice and I read the original 2012 release was in black and while. It is not a bad movie in the end being mostly average. But I was disappointed as there were so many glimpses of what could have been greatness just not followed up upon.
