About the author

Along with Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Millar has been one of the key writers for Marvel Comics in the 21st century. After proving himself in the ’90s as a talent to watch while writing for DC Comics and the UK comic 2000AD, his arrival to Marvel came at a time when Ultimate Spider-Man had just shot up the sales charts. It was in this environment that Millar made his first major contribution to Marvel with Ultimate X-Men, as Millar integrated forty years’ worth of X-Men history, characters and lore into a solid two-year run, making the companion title to Ultimate Spider-Man every bit the creative and commercial success. Next up was The Ultimates, a new rendering of the Avengers that was to continue building on the success of the Ultimate line. He and artist Bryan Hitch pulled it all off in spades: The Ultimates and its sequel, Ultimates 2, were ensconced at the top of the sales charts every month; what’s more, they were critical successes, as well. Meanwhile, Millar was invited to enter the regular Marvel Universe to take a stab at two of its most iconic characters: Spider-Man and Wolverine. Paired with industry heavyweights to draw his stories — Terry Dodson on Marvel Knights Spider-Man and John Romita Jr. on Wolverine — Millar brought the same fast-paced and cleverly constructed plots with which his Ultimate fans were already familiar. Amid building a small library of Millarworld indie comic books — including the titles Chosen and Wanted, the latter of which was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Angelina Jolie — he managed to write Civil War, the epic seven-issue miniseries that definitively reshaped the landscape of Marvel’s heroes. Kick-A**, a Marvel Icon project done in tandem with John Romita Jr., made an impressive impact on the sales chart before also being adapted for a major motion picture. In addition, Millar has reunited with Civil War artist Steve McNiven in both the pages of Wolverine and their creator-owned book Nemesis.

A fight between a team of young amatuer superheroes and some minor supervillians lead to the deaths of 600 innocent civilians, including an elementary school. This leads the US Congress to pass the Superhero Registration Act, requiring all superheroes to register with the government. Sounds reasonable, right? But this is comics, folks. Whatever super-duper firewall you create to hide this information can be broken into by a super-duper criminal hacker. "Become a federal employee, or get thrown into jail" simply because you have super-powers?
The Marvel heroes split down the middle, led by Iron Man on the pro-registration side, and Captain America on the anti-registration side.
DC and Marvel are always creating these crossover events that "will change our entire universe forever!" For once, they told the truth. And many Marvel fans hated it. I have to admit, it's hard for me to respect Iron Man or Reed Richards after this, and as for anyone else who took their side like She-Hulk, well, I just have to pretend they didn't. In spite of the controversy, I think this is a great, Watchmen-esque story that looks at superheroes from a more realistic point of view (which may be why some people hate it).
Although this book gives you a complete story that more or less works, you won't really get the full story unless you get some of the better tie-ins. For example, you won't really get what's going on with Spider-Man unless you read The Amazing Spider-Man: Civil War . I'm solidly on Captain America's side, and Straczynski's Spider-Man book put me there.
Edit to add: I'm not that familiar with Captain America, but it's probably a fair criticism of this book that its portrayal of Cap is out of character. (This may go for Tony Stark and Reed Richards as well.)
The art is beautiful and is worth the purchase price alone. It’s definitely something you’ll find yourself just stopping to stare at the details in some drawings every now and then.
If you’re gonna read any of the classic marvel events. This is the one.
Once I started this I couldn't put it down. If you're a comic fan and you haven't picked this up yet then you're missing out.

[Possible spoliers - read at own risk]
The story is written by Mark Millar and the main artist for the book is Steven McNiven; there is a list of other artists who were involved with the inking and colouring as well. I will try and not give away as much of the book as possible, but the graphic novel tells the story of the division between Marvel Universe's Superheroes fighting over the protection of their identity. The 2 main characters are Ironman and Captain America and you will get to see some of the more obscure characters like Spiderwoman.
Storyline is probably one of my favourite as well as you genuinely don't know what will happen next. Usual Marvel comic (any kind of books with villians to be honest) it's good guys vs bad guys, however this is not the case. In terms of visual, the team did a fantastic job every page stands out, you can take some good inspiration from them and it makes you want to read it over and over again.
If you want to read the comic before going to see the next Captain America movie, then this is the book to read.

I would also like to add that my book arrived damaged with heavy creases, the booked looked and felt used even though it was new. The handling of this shipment could have been better

The story is told from both sides of this 'Civil War'. It kinda makes you think and almost pick a side, I thought I would dislike Stark, but you try to see the story from his point of view, it was almost impossible not to understand why he thought he was right. At the same time, the Rebels lead by Captain America had their own ideas about the government Registration Act. Clashes, Revelations, Death and Side Changes, a really good read, especially if you want to see it how it should be before the Movie adaptation has a take on it.

A coherant (mostly) plot that was exciting and containing many fan favourite characters...such as The Punisher who is always a favourite and who appears in a very important scene!
The artwork is fantastic and the writing also so no real issues here apart from the plot rushing over some things and not properly explaining itself at the very beginning or end.
