Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

How does he do it? George R.R. Martin's high fantasy weaves a spell sufficient to seduce even those who vowed never to start a doorstopper fantasy series again (the first book--A Game of Thrones--runs over 700 pages). A Clash of Kings is longer and even more grim, but Martin continues to provide compelling characters in a vividly real world.

The Seven Kingdoms have come apart. Joffrey, Queen Cersei's sadistic son, ascends the Iron Throne following the death of Robert Baratheon, the Usurper, who won it in battle. Queen Cersei's family, the Lannisters, fight to hold it for him. Both the dour Stannis and the charismatic Renly Baratheon, Robert's brothers, also seek the throne. Robb Stark, declared King in the North, battles to avenge his father's execution and retrieve his sister from Joffrey's court. Daenerys, the exiled last heir of the former ruling family, nurtures three dragons and seeks a way home. Meanwhile the Night's Watch, sworn to protect the realm from dangers north of the Wall, dwindle in numbers, even as barbarian forces gather and beings out of legend stalk the Haunted Forest.

Sound complicated? It is, but fine writing makes this a thoroughly satisfying stew of dark magic, complex political intrigue, and horrific bloodshed. --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly

The second novel of Martin's titanic Song of Ice and Fire saga (A Game of Thrones, 1996) begins with Princess Arya Stark fleeing her dead father's capital of King's Landing, disguised as a boy. [...] In between [the beginning and the end], her actions map the further course of a truly epic fantasy set in a world bedecked with 8000 years of history, beset by an imminent winter that will last 10 years and bedazzled by swords and spells wielded to devastating effect by the scrupulous and unscrupulous alike. Standout characters besides Arya include Queen Cersei, so lacking in morals that she becomes almost pitiable; the queen's brother, the relentlessly ingenious dwarf Tyrion Lannister; and Arya's brother, Prince Brandon, crippled except when he runs with the wolves in his dreams. The novel is notable particularly for the lived-in quality of its world, created through abundant detail that dramatically increases narrative length even as it aids suspension of disbelief; for the comparatively modest role of magic (although with one ambitious young woman raising a trio of dragons, that may change in future volumes)... Martin may not rival Tolkien or Robert Jordan, but he ranks with such accomplished medievalists of fantasy as Poul Anderson and Gordon Dickson. Here, he provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites—and this is only the second course of a repast with no end in sight. Author tour.

1.0 out of 5 stars Better Quality Control From The Printer
By C Freddy on June 20, 2019
This has nothing to do with the actual writing. I had to wait two weeks for this book because Amazon managed to run out only to find out they screwed up the printing. I was pleasantly reading page 26 of A Clash of Kings when suddenly the next page goes back to page 25 and it’s from A Feast for Crows (the fourth book). There’s a good 30 pages of the fourth book in the second book. Needless to say I’m highly irritated because now I have to return this and purchase another and more than likely it will have the same issue.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pages from wrong story inserted!
By B. DeLancey on June 30, 2019
So annoying! I was reading the book and the writing took a weird jump. I noticed that the page was from a different book! Then looked forward and there are about 30 pages of that book inserted into this one. So a chunk of the story is missing. I wonder how many of these books were printed and shipped with this mistake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 25, 2019
I pre-ordered this months ago to make sure i secured a 1st edition. It is absolutely beautiful. For clarification i am reviewing the 20th anniversary illustrated edition only.

It is very heavy so you will need to read it at a table. It is a whopping 872 pages including the appendix. You couldn't sit and hold it to read without damaging your wrists. Luckily the pages fall completely flat so very easy to read.

It comes with a mixture of black and white and colour illustrations and they are stunning. I have attached some pictures of the book and the illustrations so you can get an idea.

At £30 its not cheap, but its worth every penny i paid for it.

Breathtaking.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 27, 2020
This review isn’t about the content of the book. This review is about the print quality of the actual book delivered by Amazon.
Inside print is decent. Good paper stock.
The outside cover however isn’t well printed for a collectors type issue. The gold hot foil isn’t aligned properly and has errors. I could get Amazon to replace I’m sure, but couldn’t really be bothered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go for the Harper-Voyager edition fellas!
Reviewed in India on March 7, 2018
Needles to say anything about the books. But there is something else I would like to add.

If you read a few reviews here, you would find that the Bantam edition of the books are not up to the par in terms of quality.
Harper-Voyager edition is what I
would recommend, if you are a serious reader. They are costlier, yes; but worth it for sure. Pages, binding, printing quality, size of fonts and basically everything is better on it.
