First of all, we (my husband and I) have been longtime fans of Larry David. We've seen all of the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" episodes over the seasons and really appreciate David's sharp sense of humor.

I'm also a Jane Austen fan and you might say, "What does Jane Austen and Larry David have in common?" To which I would say, they have both successfully turned their keen sense of observation of their social surroundings and culture into highly entertaining stories (books in the late Ms. Austen's case and TV shows and movies from David).

There are few comedians or comedies (either TV shows or movies) that have made me laugh so hard that my abs hurt or I have to stand up and walk out of the room to regain my breath; David's shows and now, this movie, "Clear History," have done just that.

It was also a lot of fun watching Jon Hamm (of Mad Men) "ham it up" (sorry, couldn't resist) as Larry's former and somewhat narcissistic business partner. Kate Hudson does a great job as Hamm's movie wife and the misfit group of newfound friends that Larry's character finds after re-inventing his life all do an amazing job at making us believe they are real people and not just acting out their parts.

The story is unique - which of course is why it's part of HBO productions because major studios are almost always too 'afraid' to try anything unique and only give us the same old re-cycled stories over and over ad nauseam.

Like the part fictional part real character that David portrays of himself in Curb Your Enthusiasm, he once again plays the grown up version of Charlie Brown in Clear History in a way that no other comedian has quite achieved.

It's nice too to watch a movie that doesn't cop out in the end and give the viewer a candy coated sugary 'Happy Ending' just for the sake of a well...happy ending!

But that does not put a damper on the laughs that are guaranteed from watching this movie. David and fellow producers are also smart (and therefore successful) for casting the very best actors to act as a canvas for David's Charlie Brown antics.

If laughter is the best medicine then Clear History will make you feel very very good!

A different side of Larry David
Verified purchase
Larry David, perhaps best known for his role as Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiam, is shown here in a different light. Rather than playing himself as he does on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and therefore not really "acting", here David departs into a foreign realm and plays dismayed advertising expert Nathan Flomm. Absolutely unrecognizeable as Flomm in a beautiful long wig and expert beard, David shows his remarkable range in playing a character who is completely unlike himself. Notable appearances from amazing costars include Danny McBride and Michael Keaton. I believe this film will go down as David's very best work, even eclipsing Seinfeld in its notoreity, by the time this hits the network rerun scene. In particular the music is divine with expert appearance by Chicago.

Kept watching 'cause of the cast. Overall a pretty stupid story, not as clever as the writers seem to think it is...

It was ok. Someone else pointed out that what works fine in 20 or 30 minutes, the "Curb" format, doesn't translate all that well to a full-length movie. Kind of surprising that such talented writers didn't realize this, or maybe they did and just didn't care? Cha-ching and all that.

I was also disappointed by the Jon Hamm part. I think he is fabulous, at least his character in "Mad Men" was. His role here was just blah. I'm always a bit surprised when a talented actor takes a rather dull role, but again I guess the cash register rings regardless.

And yes, that bit about "blowing Chicago" was a really low-class touch.

Great entertainment. I enjoyed this movie

Great entertainment. I enjoyed this movie. Sometimes people tend to overanalyze. I did skim through some of the reviews... I disagree with those who say this movie is a supposed dragged along tv show episode. I didn't feel that way at all while I was watching. Larry seems to play his usual character, and we also see another familiar face. Funny, relatable, and overall, worth a watch!

This was a fun film, I went into it not knowing anything about it and I really enjoyed it. A dark comedy that's not too dark, Michael Keaton is kinda channeling Beetlejuice for his small part as a angry nutcase in this and Larry David isn't as annoying in this, as he can be in, Curb your Enthusiasm, if you like Larry David, your guaranteed to like this without a doubt, fun film!

Larry David, you either love him or you don't. This is typical Larry David, Seinfeld observational humor picture. Interestingly enough there is an actual story arc to this movie. I also like the fact that it stars Danny McBride, Liev Schreiber, J.B. Smoove, Amy Ryan, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Kate Hudson, et al.

long version of Curb

very much in the same vein as David’s tv show, Curb. He again plays a despicable selfish oaf, with little in the way of compassion or social grace. If you like curb, you will find this amusing as well. Otherwise, skip it.

I really enjoyed this extended episode of Curb your enthusiasm. Definitely some good laughs. Also reminds me that I want to see Larry David in a Drama sometime. I want to seem him really try his hand at dramatic acting in a different role than himself. I think he'd do well and it would be fun to see.

Anyway if you like curb your enthusiasm, I think you'll like this movie.
