After being rear ended we needed to replace our Britax Marathon Clicktight. The Britax protected my little one, but I had gone back and forth between Britax and Clek when we transitioned to a convertible car seat. It felt like a good time to give Clek a whirl. The car accident was a bit of a wake-up call. Time to turn our 3yo back to rear-facing, and time to figure out which model between the Fllo and Foonf was best for our little one, our family, and our car.
We have one kiddo, so she sits in the center of the back seat of our 2012 Prius. Would the Fllo fit, would the Foonf fit? What were the key differences between the two seats? Was the height of either car seat going to impact my vision out of the car? The answer to the last question is: probably a little with any car seat once it’s forward-facing.
On the phone with the manufacturer I was able to determine both the Fllo and the Foonf would work in the center rear seat of our Prius. The big differences between the Fllo and Foonf are in the base, for the most part the seat portion of the two car seats are VERY similar (or the same with a few minor differences). The rigid latch technology in the base of the Foonf is a big chunk of what you’re paying extra for. Since our Prius cannot accomodate the rigid latch system in the center of the car, and since we knew our little one would always be in the center we opted for the Fllo which is designed to work with a seatbelt or latch system. The Foonf can be used with a seatbelt or latch system, BUT it was designed to work with the rigid latch system.
On the phone the person who helped me (and was so very helpful) was able to look at photos of the car seats installed to verify that they would work in a Prius.
If you ask me, after having the Britax Marathon Clicktight... and the Clek Fllo... installing any kind of car seat in a smal car (or really any car) is an uncomfortable angry-making ordeal, with or without the Click-tight feature. I always try to give myself at least 45 minutes to install a car seat correctly the first time around, or any time we are putting our car seat into a new car (rentals, grandparents, etc).
The Clek Fllo is working splendidly rear-facing in the center of the backseat of our Prius. My little one loves the better view she has, and she isn’t bothered that she went from front-facing back to rear-facing.
I have been really happy with the Clek Fllo, and also the Britax Marathon Click-Tight (bonus points to Britax for the removable washable cover). I’ll write again after we’ve had the Fllo for a spell and let you know which once wins out... but I have to say that: the transparent safety information Clek provides, the extended expiration, the extended rear-facing capability, the extended warranty, the customer support, the extra space in the back seat for the passengers sitting next to the car seat, the higher seat position for better viewing out of the windows, and their recycling program have already put them a cut above.
CONS: the stain resistant fabric is a nightmare with pee accidents. The pee wicks straight off the fabric, down through the buckle hole, soaks the padding underneath, then travels down into the plastic base into a million nooks and crannies. Even if the seat looks and feels relatively clean, give it a few hours and your car will start smelling like an outhouse. The only way we’ve found to clean it is to remove all the covers and padding, hand wash and line dry (which is annoying and takes forever, entirely inconvenient), uninstall the entire seat and then hose it down. Literally. It’s awful. If you’re on a road trip, plan to drive with the windows down until you can dedicate an hour to cleaning the seat and a day to dry all the pieces and reinstall.
Installation is not that easy. The actual act is simple, but to get this seat secure my husband has to pull so hard on the belts he practically has a stroke. I can’t do it myself. I’ve never felt truly confident in the install being secure and the seat always wobbled until we spent another $40 on the Clek mat. For the price of this seat, install should be easier!
No cup holder unless you shell out another $20. Ridiculous at this price. Same for infant insert.
A nightmare to travel with. Not just heavy, but doesn’t fit through X-ray, which requires a TSA hand check. Something on the fabric triggers TSA’s alerts, which then triggers a pat down and hold up for our family. This happens EVERY TIME. One kindly TSA agent actually told us “I would not fly with this seat again if it was me!”
Reasonably comfortable for my toddler but this is by no means the most plush seat. My daughter rarely ever falls asleep in it, and doesn’t seem comfortable when she does.
In rear-facing with the anti-rebound bar, you have to be careful taking larger kids out. My daughter’s feet constantly caught on the bar as I lifted her out. She could’ve gotten truly hurt if I’d been lifting her quickly.
Head rest is not smooth to adjust.
One final mini issue is the lack of strap holders compared to other seats. I’m constantly fishing the straps out.
The 2016 model strap covers and buckle cover were insufficient, but on our 2017 model they are improved.
PROS: straps never tangle, and are super easy to loosen and tighten. Very safe, if you can get the install correct. Definitely keeps you rear-facing as long as possible. Looks good, narrow profile.
