About the Author
“For more than a decade, Jack Newton has had the unenviable job of selling software to lawyers. With remarkable success, he has prevailed and, on the way, built a deep understanding of what makes law firms tick and stumble. This book is an excellent distillation of this insight, above all calling for law firms to swing round and face the market, to focus relentlessly on the needs of clients, and to ceaselessly improve client experiences. A considerable and important contribution to the law firm literature.”
—Professor Richard Susskind OBE, author of Tomorrow’s Lawyers
“We as lawyers often focus on “what” legal services we provide instead of on “how” we do it. Jack Newton’s new book, The Client-Centered Law Firm, is (rightly) all about the “how.” Based on Jack’s wealth of experience servicing clients in the legal marketplace, this book provides a useful guide on how to enhance client service with client-centricity and also, importantly, how to measure progress. It is a must-read for all types of legal professionals.”
—Michele DeStefano, Professor of Law, University of Miami, Affiliated Faculty, Harvard Law School Executive Education, Founder, LawWithoutWalls
“In the age of Amazon and Uber, the lesson for law firms is that experience matters—not just legal experience, but also the experience you provide your clients. Drawing on his own experience as founder and CEO of one of the legal industry’s most-successful companies, Jack Newton provides a practical blueprint for building a client-centered law firm, making the case for why it matters through data and examples, and then guiding you through the process of redesigning your own firm and measuring success.”
—Bob Ambrogi, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, LawSitesBlog.com and LexBlog.com
“Jack Newton understands the legal system was designed by the people working in it—rather than those using it. Newton knows we have to make the system better by putting our users first. He delivers, with unequaled passion, drive, and knowledge, an inspiring call to action, a roadmap for success, and a platform for change—all of which will benefit the consumers of legal services and the lawyers serving them. I loved Jack’s book, and you will too.”
—Kevin O’Keefe, CEO and Founder, LexBlog, Inc.
“The Client-Centered Law Firm is a fantastic mix of practical and theoretical—futuristic and exactly what we are seeing in law firms today. I have already implemented some of the strategies and exercises described to make my firm more client-centered.”
—Billie Tarasico, Attorney at Law, Modern Law
“This is quite possibly the most important book of the decade for lawyers. While most legal books are one or the other, The Client-Centered Law Firm expertly balances inspiring philosophy with tangible guidance in a way that only someone with Jack Newton’s understanding of the legal industry could do.”
—Jordan L. Couch, Partner, Palace Law
“The legal industry is changing and it’s time to break free of the traditional law model. Jack Newton provides the reasoning and the pathway to develop a client-centered mindset and change the legal industry—for good.”
—Kimberly Y. Bennett, Attorney and Founder, K Bennett Law LLC

Personally my favorite part of the book is the advice to just start somewhere! Don't get overwhelmed with the amount of improvements that you might need to make but simply take the Toyota method to improve by 1% at a time. A little bit of change can build up to a lot of difference! I have seen that in my own firm and I know lawyers will see it in theirs. A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step - make your first step reading this book!
Understanding the importance of creating an exemplary client experience is critically important to a modern lawyer's success. This is especially true in a world where consumer expectations, and time and attention, are all at a premium, and the ability for a client to replace you with a new legal solution is just a quick tap or swipe away on her smartphone.
Jack shows you how to create solutions and relationships built around excellent service designed to enhance your client's experiences. One of the things I liked most about how this book was written is that you don't have to try and do everything at once. You can take your time and slowly implement these concepts over time.
And one more thing. While you're implementing these new approaches to improve the client experience, remember to have fun, and share your human side. After all, life's too short not to use the techniques Jack shares, to connect and build valuable long-term win-win relationships with your clients.
In summary, "The Client Centered Law Firm" gives you all the tools and resources you need to create better client experiences, which in turn, will allow you to build a unique top-of-mind brand, and when all is said and done, more revenue at the end of the year.
Instead, this book takes a practical, common-sense approach to law practice in a world where consumers (your clients) are choosing services based on their experiences. Newton is careful to say that being client-centric doesn’t mean lawyers need to dazzle their clients. But to gain an advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace, lawyers do need to start thinking about what it's like for their clients to hire and trust them to resolve a legal matter. What client-centric means will inevitably vary depending on the type of law, the size of a practice, and the type of clients a lawyer is aiming to serve.
And Newton provides concrete examples of how firms have spent time listening to their clients to shape their firms to create a better, more satisfying experience for clients sometimes during the worst times of their lives.
Clio has long distinguished itself as a company that innovates by listening to its customers and solving pain points for practicing lawyers. Clio’s success strategy is built on making lawyers more successful.
This book gives lawyers a clear roadmap, guiding them to think through and design a client-centric practice model that works better for lawyers and the clients they serve.
