Most definitely a Gaspar Noé film.

To uninitiated viewers be warned this is a Gaspar Noé film. There will be graphic depictions of the most primal human behaviors including sex, violence, depravity and despair. From a technical viewpoint there will also be long, intense and intentionally unnerving but masterfully innovative camera work and cinematography accompanied by long, intense and intentionally unnerving but masterfully innovative use of sound. Pacing and sequence will be upside down and backwards from convention with (for example) credits inserted wherever Gaspar Noé feels like inserting them. You will be challenged and manipulated as a viewer and deliberately made to feel uncomfortable. So if this is not what you are looking for in a movie watching experience just skip this one (and all other films by Gaspar Noé). Having said that maybe just sneak a peek at the first 20-30 minutes of this film following the interview sequence to marvel at what may be the single best dance number in any movie ever up to and including West Side Story. Shut it off immediately afterwards but at least check out the opening dance sequence it is stunning film making.

For seasoned Noé fans this film is right on track with previous offerings and this directors Lord of The Flies approach to exposing human behavior as the walls of sanity and morality come crashing down as a result of whatever circumstance happens to be the subject or storyline of his films. Climax celebrates then tears down human behaviors with all the passion, technical mastery and manipulation we have come to expect from this world class film maker. Without spoilers or discussing anything beyond what we all saw in the trailer this movie was at best completely mesmerizing and at worst possibly just a little gratuitous towards the end. Hence the four stars instead of five. But like all Noé films it takes concentrated mental effort if not physical stamina to get through it. In this case the payoff is IMO worth the effort.

It should be noted that the majority of the cast are (clearly) professional dancers and the lead professional actress Sofia Boutella has a dance background and lifetime of training that rivals any of the pro dancers. From what I have read much of the dialogue was improvised with a very minimal script and the whole movie was shot in a very short period of time. All of this translates into intensely real and visceral performances.

I'll be watching this one again just to take it all in with a clear mind after absorbing the blow of the first viewing.

Make it end. Please...

Movie is mostly in French (Not that there's much dialog worth listening to anyway). There is a plot. Sort of. We fast forwarded through a lot of it because it was too boring/painful to watch, and we didn't miss any of the plot.
I'm going to see if Amazon will refund us for this waste of a purchase, but at least want to save others the agony of wanting to kick themselves for wasting their money (and time).
Entire movie could've/should've been a quick 10-minute spot. The rest of this movie was filled in with fakey-fake spasms and other pointless rants. Argh....

For anyone who doesnt know Gaspar Noe, please dont watch his work until you consider yourself a hardcore movie buff and/or cult film freak. If you don't fall into either category then its almost certain his work will fall short for you. I dont run on here when I take a chance with a film I dont like (caugh...Michal Bay films) Directors are like food, why watch their work if you dont know what to expect is in it? Don't get me wrong. Everyone should take chances with new films, just don't be surprised when you don't like it. Be glad you took the chance in the first place.

Its...unsettling.

The soundtrack is absolutely stellar! The dance sequences are hypnotic and performed by high caliber artists. But man does this film feed you nothing but utter dread. If you are an empath in any way, do not watch this. There is a highly haunting scene with a young child as well. I really wish the director would not have included that. I know that a Gaspar Noe film is meant to make you feel many awful things and he definitely succeeded. I had to take a looooong walk after wards to shake off this film.

Poor release

Yo this blu ray sucks. It has an abnormally fat case for a blu ray, unofficial branding, a big fat Certified Fresh logo that looks awful, and only one special feature. If you can play region B (and if you watch blu rays on a windows computer, you can find a way to do that easily) then I highly recommend purchasing the Arrow release instead. If you need a region A copy, to play on a regular BR player or a game console, but still care about the behind the scenes stuff (including a director commentary that this one doesn't have, which I was really looking forward to) then maybe get both and watch the special features on your computer.

The movie is insane, my favorite film of 2018, deserving of the full 5 stars. I'll be buying the Arrow release as well.

big fan of gaspar noe, he definitely didnt disappoint this time around. for sure his tamest movie, but it had its particularly raw moments. its a great ride, the pacing and the cinematography did an excellent job capturing the descent into a psychedelic trip, particularly a bad one. gotta love all the long shots too.. i know theres some sneaky camera work and transitions going on, but when youre watching it the entire movie feels like 1 long seamless take. that, combined with all of these actors being professional dancers intimately familiar with body language and choreography, made this super exciting to watch from start to finish. highly recommended

If you like movies like Funny Games or Very Bad Things - this is your movie. I danced growing up so the dance is the only reason it gets 2 stars, wonderful dancing at the beginning. The rest was just ugh. I really wanted to love it too. Big horror fan, not afraid to get uncomfortable - but having to try THAT hard to like something means well ... Maybe it just wasn't for me.
