When a lakeside tryst ends in a double murder, police detective Daniele Harper arrives on the scene determined to get answers. Clues are everywhere, but nothing adds up. Dani turns to the Delphi Center crime lab for help, but soon regrets it when her secret attraction to their chief firearms examiner threatens to distract her from the most important case of her career.
As a ballistics expert and former Navy SEAL, Scott Black knows firearms, and he knows he can help Dani unravel her case. Scott has managed to hide his interest in his best friend’s younger sister for years, but when her investigation brings them together, the sparks between them quickly burn out of control. Scott resolves to keep his hands off Dani and his eyes on the goal—identifying a killer. But when that killer zeroes in on her, all bets are off. There isn’t a line Scott won’t cross to convince Dani to trust him so that he can help her take down a ruthless murderer who has her in his sights.

This book is a fast paced suspense ride full of plot twists. The investigation gets more and more complicated and I had no idea what was going to happen next. I never guessed who the bad guy was. I loved watching the relationship between Dani and Scott. If you are looking for a romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat this book is for you. I would give this book 4 1/2 stars. Thank you to the author for an advanced copy of this book. Can't wait for her next book.
I thought that Scott was over-the-top macho, controlling, secretive and insensitive in his interaction with Dani, which made me dislike him more and more as I read through this book.
Dani was just an idiot. I only hope the police officers in my town have more sense. Dani allowed Scott to intrude into the job that she was sworn to do, she at times didn't do her job and when she did often behaved unbelievable stupidly.
There were a couple of nit-picky moments like when a person was atop a horse, not astride...come on!
I hope the next Griffin book I read has the h smarter and more confident and the H just more likeable.
That said, most, almost all of the books I've purchased from Amazon, based on reviews were excellent, fast reads and I will continue to purchase books written by one particular author, Scott Prat.
Griffin places readers next to Dani as she uncovers clues that bring more questions into her investigation. She helps readers see Dani’s determination and independence as the investigation proceeds. The author keeps creating opportunities to bring Dani and Scott together and places readers in the middle of the developing relationship between Dani and Scott. The pace of the investigation picks up momentum, and the more Dani and Scott work together the more their relationship intensifies.
The storyline’s action and danger increase at the turn of the page. Griffin introduces several support characters both good and bad providing backstories of each character and the roles they play as they enter the storyline. The author describes the importance the lab work the Delphi Center provides to the ongoing investigation. Following up on the results from the lab increases the action and danger for Dani and Scott. Griffin adds interesting twists and turns changing the storyline’s direction. Events unfold at a lightening pace. The author keeps readers on pins and needles guessing about Dani and Scott’s romance and the unpredictable ending the mystery.

Young detective Dani is made lead detective on a double homicide which on the surface seems to be a crime of passion. As the investigation continues, ballistics expert on the case Scott becomes a suspect. But Dani has known Scott for 15 years and knows he didn't do it, regardless of what the evidence says.
The crime solving is the star of this book but the romance is always there bubbling along in the background. Scott is Dani's brother's best friend and she has always crushed on him. But she knows that Scott is not a relationship kind of a guy and that he has issues resulting from his time as a Navy Seal. Scott thinks Dani's should probably stay away from him but he can't get her out of his mind and he can't stay away from her.
Along the way more murders are committed that put Dani and Scott in danger and has them dodging bullets. What I love about watching the Dani, Scott and the cops follow the clues to solve this crime is that never in a million years would I have guess the motive for the murders. If you love a crime solving mystery At Close Range is definitely a book to add to your reading list.
