The Closer: Season 3

I started watching the closer midway through season two and fell in love with it!!!! I watch it all the time now and HAD to purchase them all!!

The closer is a brilliantly composed show!

Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) is back in season three of TNT's crime procedural The Closer. With a couple years at the Los Angeles police department already under her belt, Brenda has proven that her eccentric method works at getting confessions from even the most hardened criminals. But even she's not quite sure how to handle the season opener, where a slaughtered family's sole survivor is the stunned, stoned teenage son. Bleak, dark and wonderfully scripted, the opener sets the tone for the 14 episodes that follow it. With an exaggerated Southern drawl that belies her hard edged attitude, Brenda is at her best in the field. But when dropped into personal situations, she often flounders. For instance, though she commands a team of officers underneath her, she still doesn't know how to tell her parents she lives with her boyfriend, FBI special agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney, Fools Rush In). The awkward (and sometimes poignant) moments between Johnson and her folks humanize her, giving her added dimension. Sedgwick is adept at comedy, and a couple of the episodes take advantage of her skills. Jostling with an over zealous bridezilla at a crime scene, Johnson becomes the subject of a popular Youtube video. "You've become the most downloaded fully-clothed woman on the Internet," announces her boss, Will Pope (J.K. Simmons). There is some internal drama when Brenda is ordered to make budget cuts by firing someone in her group. But the best moments occur when Brenda--calm as a cucumber--does what she does best: closes cases. Aside from a couple episodes that allude to past years, this third season (which originally aired in 2007), is easy to follow even for new viewers who haven't seen previous episodes. --Jae-Ha Kim

Just keep watching it gets better and better!! Unlike most shows, even in the later years it still is amazing!!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE and MISS, MISS, MISS THE CLOSER!

The Closer is one of my all time favorite shows. I own it on DVD and digital. I LOVED IT. I think it is Kyra Sedgwick’s best work BY FAR!
I will say that even though I think the cast was the best and the stories were great. I think that the idea that a CIA trained investigator that wouldn’t be able to lose her southern accent, is SO UNBELIEVABLE!! AND......BEING AN EDUCATED SOUTHERN WOMAN, the first few seasons she sounded almost, (well not almost, she DID) SILLY. I mean you’d think they’d done their homework and learned that CIA, or Intelligence workers like that work harder than reporters do to shed their “non regional diction”. So that part always confused me. But the accent did get a bit more believable as the seasons went on. I wish she’d kept going though. I mean they only worked like 4mnths of the year anyway. And as much as I Love Kyra and Kevin and support their family, but her current comedy show (Call Your Mother), is TERRIBLE! It is SOOOO SILLY! Not fun silly, dumb silly. Time wasting silly! Shocking silly. B/C Kyra is a funny girl.

Overall Pretty Good Series

Actually, my comments cover the episodes in the first 4 1/2 seasons, not just Season 3. Nice idea but a little too much political correctness in some episodes. Also, a little too maudlin at times, although mostly a balanced presentation, pretty good over all. I like Kyra and her crew. I enjoyed the fellow who plays Chief Pope and who also has appeared in the Coen Brothers movie, "Burn After Reading." He is equally as good here and you get to see much more of him in this series; he does a great job. I also was interested to see that in real life Kyra is the wife of Kevin Bacon. As to Kyra's boyfriend/ husband in the series, I had to keep wondering whether he ever goes to work or just mostly stays around the house, cleaning up and looking after the cat; not exactly a Rambo, more like the stereotype of the husband of Margaret Thatcher. Finally, it's a bit of US version of the 1990s "Prime Suspect" with Helen Mirren and, in its way, a nice, down-home kind of rival. Again, I like it enough to continue watching through the final 7th season.

I don't know why I wasn't that interested in this series when it was current (I think I was too busy) but it is probably my favorite. I am annoyed and troubled by Brenda's emotional tendency to fall apart when dealing with her parents or her own health, but then she's so seamlessly segways right into her area of expertise where she functions so well. I like this "flaw" in her character because it reflects the reality that we are all complex beings and though we may appear at the top of the hierarchy, we all have our vulnerabilities that we try to hide.

As a TV drama, the actors are so well-crafted and so thoroughly defined in their personality and character that I never think of these people as acting. I'm totally drawn into the story each and every time.

The BEST 'Closer' Yet!
Verified purchase
In Season Three, 'The Closer' cements its reputation as one of the smartest, sharpest, cleverest and most humorous ensemble dramas on television. Kudos to Kyra Sedgwick for creating one of the most complex and consistently entertaining female characters ever in a series. The third season features some of the best acting and the most complex storylines to date. Sedgwick anchors the show as the inimitable Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, but she does not create this excellence in a vacuum--she gets outstanding support from crackerjack scripts and the other members of the cast, who are all colorful and loveable in their own right. As the series has progressed, the Priority Homicide Squad has taken on the tone of a real family, with all the squabbling and deep loyalties that go along with it. Though I am hard-pressed to pick a favorite among the supporting cast, I have to say that Jon Tenney as FBI Agent Fritz Howard is the hottest Feebie ever, in or out of the real Bureau! I guess I will have to wait until Season Four comes out on DVD to see what further havoc Brenda wreaks on their relationship. This series is a MUST OWN!

I live this show and recently tried to binge watch it but, somehow, had no season 3. As usual, Amazon came through and got it to me before I got through season 2 so didn't have to interrupt my binge to wait. Always order my dvds from Amazon.
