4.0 out of 5 starsFunctions fine, but be prepared to buy a fuse tap for auto on and off with your car ignition
Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2019
It’s a decent hardwire Kit. It’s cheaply made, but it doesn’t cost much either. It does the job just fine. It does suck that it didn’t come with a fuse box tap... you either have to wedge it in between an existing fuse into the receiver, or wire it to your battery terminals.

I wanted to use a fuse in my Porsche that automatically turns on and off with my ignition, so I went the fuse route. Even after wedging the positive wire in between the radio fuse, the detector would stay on even with the key removed and the car locked.

I ended up having to buy a fuse tap from auto zone so that power was automatically turned on and off with my ignition. Kinda sucks this kit doesn’t come with one by default.

All that being said, I got it all connected, ran it in my overhead and side trim to cover the wire, and the end results look great and functional exactly how I wanted it to.

Just be prepared to buy a fuse tap separately if you want to set it up correctly using the fuse box. I’ve only had it installed for a week, so time will tell how long it will last. Fingers crossed!

Worked with my Cobra RAD450, the connection that goes into the detector power port sticks out much further than it needs to though.

1.0 out of 5 starsInline fuse in bad location.
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2019
If the idea is to hardwire your radar device why not have the fuse at a much different location in relative length in cable. Meaning, if you mount it to your fuse box as I did. You have to cut the cord and splice it together as it will not sit cleanly with "as is" length of cable given before fuse. If you wish to mount it to your battery and run the cable through your firewall, then, you'll always have to pop the hood in the event of a blown fuse. I mounted it through the fuse box so the power to radar detector would only be available when car is started/accessory power is on. Straight to battery would mean the line is always hot. In my opinion it's not clean that way.. works fine once you splice out inline fuse and relocate down the powerline.

3.0 out of 5 stars The plug portion is longer and sticks out of the detector, also Fuse Holder Broke under 3 months
Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2019

This was somewhat of an overpriced items for what it is. The actual straight cord version costs less than the one with nothing on the ends (this one). It serves the purpose of being able to hardwire to the fuse box and you have to find a metal screw to tap the ground into. I ran is up the mirror hole and around the top of my headliner down the driver's side and to the fuse box and still had about 2 feet of spare wire left.

UPDATE 9/9/19: The fuse holder broke last week just from the strength of the spring. I haven't touched it or done anything to it, it's been sitting in the fuse area and then I noticed the radar detector wasn't turning on and then found the white plastic was broken. This thing is pretty cheap so for the price this was not a good product.

The issue I have with it is the plug itself is long. Probably because it works with all Cobra models. It fits but it is twice the length of the stock snub nose plug so it sticks out the side of the detector and looks awkward like that. Of there was a shorter one of definitely bump this up to 4 stars and would enjoy the item more.

This review is a reflection of long term use of this product.

I installed it in my 2009 Jeep Liberty, disassembling my dashboard and running it down behind. In my case I spliced it into the cigarette lighter wiring, leaving the included fuse holder intact as an extra fail-safe.

Almost immediately, the plug's center core (the end that plugs into the radar detector) pulled out. It would constantly pull out of the metal shell when I unplugged it from the radar detector. Luckily I never lost it down my defrost vent.

I don't use the radar detector very often; maybe a few times a year on long trips so all this wire really had to do was just 'be'. This last weekend we left for a trip and nothing... no power to the radar detector. The cigarette lighter circuit still worked so I thought it was the inline fuse. Later, I pulled that part of the dash and discovered the fuse holder had become brittle, cracked and fell apart. No blown fuse; the holder had just split apart on its' own and the fuse fell out.

It was in a complete unexposed area of the car. No heat, no sunlight. Never tugged, pulled on, or abused in any way.

Additionally, the detector end of the product was exposed to sunlight and in moderate to hot sun I was very concerned how the wire's insulation softened. The quality of the wire is awful.

I ended up just pulling the entire thing out and throwing it away. I repaired where my car's wiring had been spliced, wrapping it tight with electrical tape and put the dashboard back together for good. From now on I'll use the Cobra provided cigarette lighter adapter.

This is a nice, very cool idea but the quality is so poor and not worth any wear and tear on your car. I could have made the same thing myself and had it last indefinitely but no.

1.0 out of 5 stars ASIN wrong to website - bottom line, not the same product as advertised and will not work/fit...

I echo the product review of 5/18/2021 - the plug on this adapter is too short - the ASIN I received (twice) was X000M3UEPR - the advertised (previously purchased three times and worked/fit perfectly) unit is B004AMBW1U; the latter has a longer plug and fits my RAD 480i, 380 and 350. The one I received was too short for all. Although bulkier and 2X the price, this one works: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RA38V06/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This worked perfectly with my Radar Detector, and was a snap to use. the Hardest part was finding a switched fuse location (most in my Car were constant on). Plenty of length to run from drivers side fuse panel, up the A pillar, into the headliner, across the top of the windshield to the rear view mirror, and down to the detector. All told it looks like a pro install, and it took like 10 minutes (most of that time was finding a switched fuse to buddy up with).

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked for my RAD450

LOVE this thing. I have a new 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL and I hated how this and my dash cam wasted so much space on the dash with the two outlet cigarette adapter plug.

My Jeep came with Aux switches, and a factory installed wiring harness under the passenger foot area. So I got this, tapped both into the switch harness there, and now I have no wires anywhere.

Plenty of cord here, too much actually I had to bundle a bunch up and tuck it out of sight. But there's enough for pretty much any install you could do.

For the price, this is a steal. Being able to have no more cigarette lighter plugs is worth far more than the cost of this kit... LOVE it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great. Installed this when I added my new headunit..

This works great. For those who wondered what that little white thing is: it a fuse holder (fuse included). The best way to install this (for beginners like me), is when you install a new headunit (aftermarket navigation system or sound system). If you aren't planning on taking your dash apart, then there's no good way to install this. Basically, when you are crimping the new headunit wiring harness into your vehicle wiring harness, you can splice the two wires from this thing in there as well. Most professional installers recommend soldering wires together since cars shake and rattle constantly; however, i found that using barrel crimp connectors was much easier. Basically, i twisted the power lead (+) on this cable in with the 12V ignition lead in the headunit harness, then crimped that into the vehicle harness; you do the same thing with the common wire (-) to the battery negative lead, and viola. The worst part is contorting your body up underneath the dash trying to pull this to where i wanted my radar to be mounted; but its at least 10ft long, so there's plenty of length to play with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Solution!!!
Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2012

In my car (2003 Honda Civic) the lighter/power adapter is directly in the way of the passenger side cup holder, so when using something that is plugged in only small bottles or cups will fit in the holder, and even then they are hard to remove.

I found this hard wire kit easy to install and it works great!!! Another reviewer has mentioned that he didn't know how to install it because it came with no instructions. Mine also came with no instructions, but the sticker with the "+" on it wrapped around one of the wires, coupled with the fuse being on that wire, led me to believe that it was in fact the positive lead.

I installed the hard wire kit at the same time as a new in dash media player, so I just soldered the wires from this kit directly to the switched power and ground wire on the new media player's harness. That way it comes on when I turn the car on and I didn't have to worry about finding a ground up under the dash.

Overall, it gives you a lot more clean install look, and it's an easy to use and install product.

Recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cut fuse holder out. Use add-a-circuit on fuse box to install
Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2016
Verified Purchase
I bought two of these. Installed both and worked ok for about 10 months or so. Then out of nowhere, on one of them, the fuse holder broke. Why? I have no idea since nobody messed with it or anything like that, it just stayed under the dash out of view. I ended up super gluing it and it worked fine for a few more months. In the meantime, the same thing happened with my second one that was on a different car. Ended up super gluing that one too. They ended up breaking again and finally I just got fed up with them and took the fuse holder out and just crimped the two wires together because I used an add-a-circuit on the fuse box to hook this up which has a fuse for this anyway.

If you're going to buy this, use an add-a-circuit and just get rid of this cheap fuse holder to begin with. Save yourself the hassle of doing it later when it's under the dash or whatever and you're trying to crimp the two wires together while being in an uncomfortable position.

Other than that, works good. Better than using up one of your cigarette lighter outputs.
