Coughlin's law: never tell tales about a woman, she'll hear you no matter how far away she is.

Cocktail was originally a novel; it was written by Heywood Gould. The book is more complicated and serious, about the ’80s and power and money. While they changed this movie drastically from its original plot, it is fun to watch. This movie is a classic, filmed in late 1987/88. It was the first movie with Tom Cruise that I saw as a teen, so it holds a special place in my memory. I love the Irish humor speckled throughout, and the "I can do anything I set my mind to" mentality.

The Cruise .... and the Cock-Tail ..
Verified purchase
Let's be honest about the actor and the one , the only Tom Cruise ! He climbed up the ranks very quickly ... very swiftly and he did it with sheer determination. From his first appearance on screen with " Endless Love" to all of the other Big block-buster's ever since. This is one of my top 5 of his from the past 35 years that he has been an actor, producer and Mega star. This movie which is set in different locales from New Jersey,NYC and the Island of Jamaica. This movie tell's it's viewer how life was lived in a decade, such as the 1980's that spun trends, big hair, and GREED. The cast , the location's, the dialogue and sound track worked so well... the movie left me wanting more.! I have seen "Cocktail" like.. .. 5-7 times in 25 years... HBO and Show-Time networks back in the day use to air it in heavy rotation.. Yes Bartender's back in the 1980's-2005 use to make a killing ..but times have changed. Most people born after 1995. . seldom go out like generation's past. Nor do they spend the sort of monies that was a given in these fancy clubs..bars, sports tavern's and pick up joint's. ! Ahhhh .... the good ole days.. So when your sitting at home .. and ready to take a trip back in time . Where the drinks had fancy names, and the lovely ladies piled in the "watering hole's" for Wednesday's "Ladies Night's"...! Then lay back and slam down this classic .... Bartender .... Pour me a .... "Cocktail"... !

A slightly different Tom Cruise movie

This movie certainly isn't action packed or filled with non-stop eye candy, but what it is, is entertaining and fun. Comedy, drama, friendship, romance, and in some ways, motivational and eye opening, all accurately describe what you get with this film. It might not be his greatest work ever, but it is most definitely entertaining, worth the money, and I highly recommend giving it a try.

Excellent HD blu-ray picture quality, enjoyable film!

The "Cocktail" blu-ray has an outstanding, pretty HD picture, with very accurate colors (as with the flesh tones, for example), vivid colors, and it's very sharp . . . yet it's a 1988 film! The audio is solid. This is a couple of cuts above the DVD version. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great job on this good film's Blu-Ray picture, it was clearly remastered with care. A+.

The story is terrific, it is more real-life and more interesting than some other reviewers have said. Yes, it's a vehicle for Tom Cruise to flash his smile all day, but the real star here, to me, is Bryan Brown as his teacher/boss/sidekick in bar-tending, and in friendship. A more attractive and better-acting female lead than Elizabeth Shue would have been nice, but it's an appealing romance story, a realistic one, even an everyday one, and more than aptly and professionally done. Locations include both NYC and a tropical island, with attractive photography in both places.

Kokomowed Me Over

I just love that song...after all it revived the Beach Boys career yet again (they've had more revivals than Billy Graham)...and didn't hurt John Stamos' much either (not in film). Tom Cruise in a down and dirty love story that is just plain summer entertainment for the time it was made. The flashy bartender was at the peak of his social acceptance at the time and it works onscreen pretty well. Pretty boys and pretty girls is what it's all about and that Beach Boys harmony. Disharmony ensues as Cruise works harder at making it big than at seeing love staring him in the face in the guise of the 80's Girl you'd most want to live next door, Elizabeth Shue and Bryan Brown (Aussie through and through) plays a mean foil and fodder for Cruise's moral mill in the story. Don't look for Academy Award performances or universal themes other than the oldest three of them all...love, greed, and friendship...and you'll have a great time on Kokomo!

This film is one of my favorite Tom Cruise Movies Its got a great story bout a soldier Brian Flanigigin who comes home to the big city to find that the world is tough and his military training don't hold a lot of water. Frustrated he walks into a bar in uptown and ends up working for a strange yet funny bartender named Coughlin who has his own theories on life Brian soon learns what is included in the nightlife of the big city and is taken on a spiraling ride thru the crazy world of the club scene when s*** hits the fan he heads to Jamaica and continues to tend bar falls in love screws up loses the girl and winds up back in the big city with a different woman. Later in the movie Brian gets frustrated with where he's at and goes to find his Friend Coughlin and he drinks with him only to find his friend dead the next day Distraught Brian runs after the Love he lost in Jamaica and once he convinces her that all he wants is her things begin to turn around. "a truly moving Story if you haven't seen it its a must see even if your not a Tom Cruise fan"

Tom Cuise in his heyday

I remember seeing this movie nearly 20 times back in my youth. As I watch it 20 years later, I recognize that the plot wears a little thin in places. But, hey, its Tom. I love Elizabeth Shue as well and she is a beauty in this movie. The movie was a nice walk down memory lane, is full of fun beach scenes and all the drama gets wrapped up in a happy ending.
