I ordered this trowel for the exclusive use of digging mess holes while backpacking. I bought a folding stainless steel one long ago, being much heavier than this one. At 11 inches in length (5 inches of handle and 6 inches on the blade) and less than 2 ounces in weight, it is a perfect backpacking trowel. The digging blade goes from 2 to 2 3/4 inches in width. The handle is 1 inch wide by 3/4 inch in depth and hollow on the back. This trowel is made out of hard plastic with sharp edges that help cuts through the soil fast and orderly. It is bright orange in color so you can locate easily if you drop it in the woods.

Lost my camping poop shovel so I purchased this one on Amazon. Works well in the sand but most of my trips are in the NC mountains and the shovel does not have a serrated edge for digging through small roots etc. I would not purchase this as your primary p@@p shovel. As not to just waste the plastic and recycle it, I'm going to use my multitool and try to create some new edges on the shovel. Hope you find this helpful

This shovel is great for digging holes and stuff. Its ability to bury poop makes it a truly multifunction tool. The bright orange color makes it easy to find in the snow. Also good to have nearby so if you drop trou to do your business and a hunter mistakes you for a hairy wildebeest, you can frantically wave the blaze orange to get his attention. Awesome all around.

If you look in the product photo the trowel has measurement markings on the edge of it in inches. I don't know if the one I received is a knockoff or they changed the design but mine does not have any measurements on the sides of it. Other than that it seems to be what is advertised. It feels fairly strong and does not flex much. I wish it was a little lighter but to achieve that they would probably have to compromise the strength of it.

I live in the woods of Pennsylvania, where there are rocks and gravel-y dirt that just chews this thing up. If there are any kind of roots nearby, you best find a different spot to dig because you won’t win against them with this trowel!! The roots push your shovel out of the way.

I was very disappointed. After I realized the uselessness of the Coghlan’s Backpacking Trowel, I got a folding shovel with a serrated edge that digs nice big holes pretty quickly.

I highly recommend a nice folding shovel for anyone camping in the woods where there are rocks and roots and things... I don’t know where this plastic thing would be useful. —Unfortunately not anywhere around here!!!

However the photo used to sell this item is very misleading as it shows the trowel next to 2 rolls of biodegradable tissue so I thought I was getting the trowel and the toilet paper. Only the trowel is included so i was disappointed opening the packet. The same trowel is sold cheaper so I would have brought it from a different seller if I had known only the trowel was included.
