“Tracy Crosswhite is one of the best protagonists in the realm of crime fiction today, and there is nothing cold about A Cold Trail.” —Associated Press
In New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni’s riveting series, Seattle homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite returns home to a brutal murder and her haunted past.
The last time homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite was in Cedar Grove, it was to see her sister’s killer put behind bars. Now she’s returned for a respite and the chance to put her life back in order for herself, her attorney husband, Dan, and their new daughter. But tragic memories soon prove impossible to escape.
Dan is drawn into representing a local merchant whose business is jeopardized by the town’s revitalization. And Tracy is urged by the local PD to put her own skills to work on a new case: the brutal murder of a police officer’s wife and local reporter who was investigating a cold-case slaying of a young woman. As Tracy’s and Dan’s cases crisscross, Tracy’s trail becomes dangerous. It’s stirring up her own haunted past and a decades-old conspiracy in Cedar Grove that has erupted in murder. Getting to the truth is all that matters. But what’s Tracy willing to risk as a killer gets closer to her and threatens everyone she loves?

Tracy Crosswhite is one of the best protagonists in the realm of crime fiction today, and there is nothing cold about A Cold Trail.” —Associated Press

In this 7th installment to author Robert Dugoni’s Tracy Crosswhite series, Tracy & Dan return to their hometown of Cedar Grove, but this time, it’s as a family, with baby Daniella in tow.
Representing a local merchant, Dan becomes entrenched in a legal battle with the City, while Tracy—who is on maternity leave—tries to adjust to her new role as a stay-at-home mom. But when past meets present, linking a cold murder case to a new investigation into two suspicious deaths, Tracy is pulled back into the fold, causing tension between her and Dan as she struggles to find a balance between motherhood and career.
“A Cold Trail” showcases Tracy’s softer side while still offering up a very compelling mystery. As with each book in this series, Robert Dugoni weaves an intricate web of secrets, suspense and intrigue. But unlike the previous books, “A Cold Trail” has a heavier emphasis on the personal, showcasing Tracy and Dan’s relationship and their newly formed family.
This is one of my all-time favorite series, and I can only hope that there will be many more installments still to come.
Instead, Tracy is pulled into a recent murder case by her old family friend and mentor. As she works to solve the crime, she learns it is connected to two cold cases, one as old as her sister's murder. Two of the victims were her sister's friends from high school. Are the deaths related? Can Tracy solve the puzzle without losing her own life, or putting her family in danger?
This is Robert Dugoni at his best! His mastery of intrigue, weaving the story in and around the families of Cedar Grove, using their secrets, love, hurt, anger, and now murder, to tell the story and leave you wondering who the real suspect is until the very end. Even though we know everyone's secrets, we can't help but hope that love will triumph and the idyllic Cedar Grove of Tracy's childhood will be one day return as little Daniella grows up.

The other main reason is the writing style, which keeps you reading even when you should be doing something else. Dugoni gives you books with suspense and heart, a great combination.
Dugoni's typical facility for strong character development and plot are on display here, amplified by the more confined canvas of a small town. The population is familiar. But not stereotypical. The cases are puzzling. But the clues are all there. The suspense mounts. Shots are fired. And then the winter weather becomes a factor. Someone is not who everyone thinks they are. The writing is clear and compelling and enjoyable.
Disclosure: Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing a free copy of this book in return for my honest review.
Her husband, Dan is an attorney based in Seattle who, while in Cedar Grove, is investigating some shady real estate deals in town. Deals which simply make no proper business sense.
The reader actually gets two stories which, as the novel unfolds, meld together. The two become one story very nicely due to Robert Dugoni’s talented writing.
There are some old characters here; some new, as well. All are developed nicely. There are some very good twists and turns to keep the reader entertained from beginning to end. He finishes the novel smoothly with a good epilogue. The epilogue finishes the book nicely and smoothly leaves room for the next book in the series
It's a great mystery that will keep you guessing and reading. Also appreciated the way they handled new parenthood and the challenges of Tracy working as a police detective.

I really liked his dedication in this one and also the way he fleshed out his friend some more at the end as well. His loss is clearly ours, too. I very much liked the new character Therese. I was less than impressed with Chief Calloway, though, and some of his behaviour. At one point we had Tracy go to interview a prior mayor, who then told her he'd "let Gary know we spoke" apropos of goodness' knows what.....I didn't get why he needed to let Gary know at all !!
There were odd mistakes in this one, too. They visited a restaurant one night and were handed menus upon arrival and then again a few minutes later when water was served, he wrote knit and not knitted, born not borne, there were the odd apostrophe mistakes and missing punctuation here and there but nothing too often, thankfully.
I'll look forward to the next story in the series though I preordered this one so now have quite a wait, I expect.

Lots to love & lots to look forward to in the next book, glad the series is going strong
