Cold War Submarines: The Design and Construction of U.S. and Soviet Submarines, 1945-2001 Kindle Edition
"A compelling reference material and chronology of submarine designs as well as a look at the radically different approaches of the two competing superpowers."
"Outlining the evolution of the modern submarine in meticulous detail, Cold War Submarines is a serious reference for naval historians and a tribute to sub crews, designers, and builders. . . . The detailed research, personal interviews, and excerpts from declassified reports give the reader great insights into the contrasting ideologies and disparate political-economic systems that drove both navies in the Cold War." --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Had it not had the subtitle "The Design and Construction of U.S. and Soviet Submarines", I would have given it 3 stars which would not reflect in truth the value of this book. Published in 2004, it is somewhat dated in content but not a lot has changed in details regarding the subject and for that it is highly valuable.
There is still a market for books on Cold War-era submarines of NATO, Warsaw Pact and other aligned powers and of course China's burgeoning force-projection provides plenty of material for a further book on these other countries. However, the book in question here is laser-focused on doing what it says on the cover and for that it certainly deserves five stars.
