Rightly so. I finished my college calculus career in 1975.
Then I found Nielson's Panda book, and we suddenly had a fun and practical way to review our algebra and other core skills required for the modern SAT.
The book is not about pandas, but it reflects Nielson's panda-like, cheerful, and thorough approach for studying for the SAT math tests. Think of the movie "Kung-fu Panda" - this is Nielson's tough-love approach to mastering SAT math. There really aren't any shortcuts - you just have to do the work. He makes it practical and fun.
Each lesson is self-contained, and reviews an important area that develops skills required for a brilliant score.
The lessons can be taken in any order you desire, since they are self-contained. We studied exponents, then expressions (chap 6), then complex numbers, then equation solving, etc. Become a strong panda slowly, by building your skills in areas where you are weak, before moving on to lessons that require your newly honed baby panda skills.
I take the lessons alongside my daughter, and allow her to teach me when necessary. She likes to race on the chapter review tests, and usually beats me.
Neilson provides many additional resources on his web site, and other study guides as well. Don't pass those up.
He really is a very productive panda-man, and I highly recommend his work.
The author could make this book half the size and get rid of questions non-existent on either test and it would deliver the same benefit--without having you spin your wheels for questions you will never see on either test.
It's meant to be a review book for the SAT specifically, and I see people reviewing it as a go-to math book. I don't think it's that, but it does have exactly what the SAT offers. It's great if you're proficient in math already and want to see what the SAT has to offer in a single book and gives real insight into the exam with quick tips, examples of questions, and well-explained answers in the examples. If you're a student who needs a bit more help in math, it might not be best book.
But I was mainly using it as a review to freshen up my skills specifically for the SAT. And in that end, it worked great.
However, I’d like to point out the following minor areas for Mr. Phu in order for him to further improve the book.
First, in the Table of Content, the subtitles for each chapter do not align with those used within the specific chapter. Also, it would be very helpful for the readers if page number for each subtitle is added in the Table of Content.
Second, on pp. 267-268, the answers to problem #1 and #6 should be positive as area, pi, radius, height, volume can’t be negative; the answers to #29-31 should have been further simplified.
Other than that, we didn’t find other errors or typos in the book.
Brovo to Mr. Phu’s effort in writing this book!
