Too Real
Verified purchase
Definitely consider this a warning: This movie contains very graphic domestic violence and rape scenes.

This movie shows the real side of these situations. Ones that anyone who has been in these situations can relate to. It doesn't sugar coat them, it doesn't show false victories. This is the reality for many women of all races, but statistically even more women of color. It is brutal, but perhaps if people see this reality and understand that it happens every day, perhaps people with real power can change it so this is no longer a reality.

Years ago.. when this movie came out ..I recall the commercials and the promotional tours and clip's about it. I never saw it in the theater ...but yesterday and tonight. I finally finished it.. let me say this. Tyler Perry and his ladies did an EXCELLENT job.. Loretta Devine is an actress ...that screams ..talent. I remember her in "Waiting to Exhale" and she nearly stole the film from Angela Bassett ...only in a sweet way. Thandie Newton ..whew ! She's quite the predator ..but a gutsy gal in the bed room. Micheal Ealy ..another terrific actor playing a war veteran..who beats his children and abuses his wife. Whoopi Goldberg hasn't mellowed ..but only sweetened her acting chops. She so reightfully deserved that Oscar that she won for her role in "Ghost" nearly 30 years ago . Two of the other leading ladies in the film I have had a brief encounter with. In 1999 I saw Janet Jackson in concert in Tampa,Florida very up close...that is talent .. Actress Kimberly Elise I have had the pleasure of meeting "twice" .. I met her at "24 hr Fitness" in 2005 in Hollywood,Ca. Then about in 20 teens I met her again and briefly chatted in a Ralphs super market in Hollywood. She was with her daughter ..She is another amazing actress ...Spike Lee for some reason has a born to pick with Tyler Perry because of some of his movies..? Tyler creates projects for African American females ..who wouldn't be able to work in Hollywood or Network television due to racial bias from casting agent's,producer's and director's who would prefer "Young, White or the latest flavor" in the industry. Some actresses don't really peak until they are over 35 years of age or mid 40's..? Lastly some screen writer's only write material for "White " women and to appeal to a White audience.. This movie dealt with many subjects that affect .."NEGRO" females ... Religion,Rape,Depression,Insecurity,Toxic Relationships,Bi-Sexuality,AIDS,Drug Use,Domestic violence and Class. The scene that really pissed me off was how the kids ..were dangled from the window ...but I'm sure it bothered many. Over all this ...movie was really good... I wouldn't watch it again..especially the rape scene... The actor's dug deep and delivered an outstanding performance.. !!

This movie is empowering! Not just for ladies of color but every single lady! Omg, every woman is represented in this movie, the rich, the working poor, the poor, the virgin the whore! Tyler Perry did it again! What a great message! To love, honor and respect your self, to see your self as God sees you so you can truly accept love so you can see real love! Be careful of the predators! Stand up for who you are and love and respect the other women because only God knows what they are going through! A must see

I Loved It!

While I usually prefer comedy or lighter movies, this move was neither. Be prepared to think, listen, smile, laugh, be hurt, upset, see yourself (or not), see others that you know (or not). Be prepared to think of how many other women you see in your daily life that may be portrayed by one of these women's stories. This movie, which so often reminded me of reading a book with its descriptive lines & poetic monologues was very well done. The phenomenal star studded cast intricately wove their characters together revealing, in the end, a beautiful tapestry that was well worth the time. I loved it. I regret not having read the book before. Very well done.

I had never heard of this movie until I heard Whoopie Goldberg talk about it on The View the other day with Tyler Perry. She said the character she played didn't leave her mind for 2 years. I thought, WHAT?? I have to see this. It is a movie you can probably watch only one time. It is VERY dark, real and raw. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, so you can't have distractions while watching or you'll most likely miss something. I love the message.

Amazing, just an amazing film. I thought this was just a great embodiment of the poetry. Not for everyone, because I met quite a bit of resistance when recommending to friends, but to each his/her own. If you appreciate good theater and spellbinding acting, this is for you. Maybe not so much if you're not familiar with the original works or don't want to deal with deep and difficult issues. Kimberly Elise had me wanting to just reach into the film and hold her, she was just incredible - and I'm definitely not very 'touchy-feely'. Loretta Devine, fabulous; Phylicia Rashad, fabulous; This was just an incredible piece of work. For the record, Janet J. is the weakest link, by a long shot (and I'm not trying to be mean, just honest) -- but even she's pretty good. Ymmv.

I would highly recommend this film to everyone -- all women, and men. Don't let the film title scare you away. This film was about African American women but it's not only for African American women. I think every one who watches it will be able to relate to at least one of the characters in a deep and profound way.

I usually stay away from Tyler Perry films. I find myself just absolutely insulted by his Madea series. I started changing my mind about him when a friend took me to see Alex Cross. He was simply amazing in that film and I thought "wow, this guy can actually act!". Then I saw For Colored Girls and I now have a respect for Mr. Perry that I have for no other filmmaker I have ever experienced aside from Spielberg. I read this book in college and it was the inspiration for my life at that time. When I heard this was coming to film... and that Tyler Perry was doing it... I cringed. But I need not have worried. Mr. Perry far surpassed my expectations and brought this book to life in a way that renewed its message for me. Bravo to you, Mr. Perry. Bravo.

Now, on to the cast. How these group of women did not win, or were not even nominated for an Oscar, is simply baffling. Each one of these amazing actresses put their entire being on display here. Their heart and souls were laid bare on the screen for us. This was acting at its finest. How in the world did this film get ignored at Oscar time??? How did these actresses get ignored at Oscar time?!?!? This is why I have absolutely no respect the Academy Awards. It's not recognizing the best actors/actresses, but celebrating top money-makers. If the Oscar really went to the person who gave the most outstanding performance in a motion picture then one of these ladies would have surely taken it home. It's just criminal that they were ignored by the Academy. Not even a nomination. Tisk tisk tisk, Academy. I can't say enough good things about this film. It is easily one of my top 3 films of all time.

Amazing acting from highly talented actresses and actors. Brilliant film making and script. I kept thinking of Shakespeare in style and dialogue delivery.

One of the best movies I have ever seen.

Thank you for pulling back the curtain, we have so much in common....best regards from a white woman from NYC.
