One of my FAVORITE Duke movies!
Verified purchase
---As with Wayne's most unforgettable--and believable--characters, in "The Commancheros," Wayne plays a "tough man," whose need for an active life masks great inner pain (a friend of Wayne's dead wife asks him, "How long has Alice been gone now? Four years, isn't it?," Wayne absent-mindedly replies, "Four years, three months...eighteen days..." Classic Wayne.....As a Texas Ranger, Wayne is charged with arresting a charming card shark (played wonderfully by Stuart Whitman) who was unfairly convicted of murder. The two eventually join forces, and attempt to break up a lethal gun-smuggling ring (headed by the always-excellent Lee Marvin)...

----The exceptional Michael Curtiz directs this action-packed and fast-moving film---and the musical score is one of the best you will hear in a "Western." Uniformly excellent performances & gorgeous scenery...all wrapped up with the Duke on top...What more could you ask for? HIGHLY recommend!

Stunning Horsemanship
Verified purchase
A typical formulaic John Wayne movie, but what really stands out for me is the horses and horsemanship. This was filmed at a time when Hollywood still employed real cowboys, many had been riding since kids. As stuntmen, they really have a chance to showcase their skills, and it is obvious. Tremendous riders, and incredibly well trained (and gorgeous) horses, it was very tough work for both cowboys and the horses back then.
Anybody who appreciates horse and rider should enjoy this film.

"I always figured to die. The question is when."

The problem with The Commancheros, is that Wayne should have died. He and others were badly outnumbered (Like in the wagon chase at the end) but somehow survive and on more one occasion. TC just kept stretching things a bit too far. The cinematography and music are very good. An all right John Wayne movie.

No one can dispute that John Wayne made great westerns, and that he always was the same character bar none.
