Home is where her heart is
When Presley Christensen returns to Whiskey Creek with her little boy after two years away, she has completely changed her life. She's made peace with her past and overcome the negative behavior that resulted from her difficult childhood. Now she's back in the small town that was the closest thing to "home" she ever knew--the town where she can be with the sister who's her only family.
There's just one catch. Aaron Amos still lives in Whiskey Creek, at least until he moves to Reno to open a branch of the Amos brothers' auto body shop. And no matter how hard she's tried, Presley hasn't been able to get over him. Seeing him again makes the longing so much worse. But she hopes she can get through the next few months, because she can't fall back into his arms...or his bed. She's come too far to backslide now. And there's a secret she's been guarding--a secret she'll do anything to protect.

-Library Journal
"[The characters'] heartwarming romance develops slowly and sweetly. The sex is fantastic, but the best part is how Simon and Gail tease and laugh as they grow closer."
-Publishers Weekly on When Lightning Strikes
"A hero in need of redemption, a heroine up to the challenge, and an idyllic California gold country setting brilliantly launch Novak's foray into the thriving 'small-town community' market."
-Library Journal on When Lightning Strikes
"Affecting, painful, sometimes funny, but ultimately satisfying, this engrossing tale of love and forgiveness takes on real problems and gives its characters the strength and compassion to come through with flying colors. Real people-with all their virtues and vices-live in Whiskey Creek, and Ted and Sophia will be two more you'll be glad to have met."-Library Journal on Take Me Home for Christmas (Starred Review)
"In this sensitive, passionate, and heartbreakingly poignant second installment of her Whiskey Creek series, Novak masterfully explores what happens when a woman whose entire life has been consumed by playing a variety of roles casts off her suffocating masks and, with the support of an unexpected lover, embraces who she was, is and can be."
-RT Book Reviews on When Snow Falls (2012 Reviewers' Choice Winner and Nominee for Book of the Year)
"It's steamy, it's poignant, it's perfectly paced-it's When Lightning Stikes and you don't want to miss it!"
-USATODAY.com's Happy Ever After blog
"Romantic gold by a superior novelist."
-RT Book Reviews on When Lightning Strikes
"Whenever I see a new Brenda Novak book, I buy it and read it, pronto."
-Linda Lael Miller, #1 New York Times bestselling author
"With a great supporting cast of characters Novak fans have come to know quite well, When Summer Comes is a magical addition to the already heartwarming Whiskey Creek series."

About the author

Join Brenda at one of 32 stops when she goes on a two-month traveling bookstore (Airstream) tour across the United States—from Sacramento to Connecticut—in April and May of 2023 to celebrate the release of THE SUMMER ON THE ISLAND, which comes out April 11th. It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.
"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including eight Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best, the Silver Bullet and the National Reader's Choice Award.
Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually playing pickleball or raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.6 million!

I like that both Aaron and Presley managed to get their lives back on track, but I wish that I had seen more of their struggle to do that. When exactly did Aaron get himself clean? They never really talked much about the fact that they were both drug addicts, they usually just used the word "partying". I wish that I had gotten more insight on how the characters managed to overcome their addictions. Though it was clear as the story went on that Aaron was truly Presley's addiction. I really hate to say it but it felt as if their addictions had been sugarcoated and we never saw Presley tell Aaron about what happened in Arizona. I liked that they got their happy ending, but I was so disappointed that we never really saw what lead Aaron to the realization of his feelings.
I hated Cheyenne, which makes me sad because I LOVED her story. Loved everything about her and Dylan. I hate how she acted and honestly wished that Presley or Aaron would call her out on her behavior. I honestly don't think that the subplot of Cheyenne/ Dylan added a single thing to the story. I felt more that it took away time from Aaron and Presley and their story. Time that Aaron and Presley needed to make their story more cohesive to me. I was left feeling that Dylan definitely deserved better than Cheyenne.
I like Riley, even if he was a bit pushy at times, but at the same time it was things that Presley needed to hear. I liked hearing about this mysterious Phoenix, baby mama of his.
Overall, I did like Aaron and Presley's story and honestly wish that there had been more written rather than have to see the destruction of Cheyenne's character. I also think that there doesn't need to be a secondary romance with the lead character. It is starting to seem more like a plot device that I feel is completely unnecessary. Mrs. Novak already did it once in Take Me Home for Christmas, I don't see why it needed to be done again in this book. I know there is another Whiskey Creek book coming out in November, but I have to say I'm not very anxious about it after being disappointed with this one.

I think I was completely disappointed with the way this story was written, how the characters were written because it hit home to me because I had a family member who was a drug addict. A family member who sadly succumbed to her addiction less than a month after I wrote my review. I think Brenda Novak had an excellent opportunity to show what it was really like for a person who struggled with drug addiction and she dropped the ball. I still feel that she could have done a better job with Aaron because even after a year, I can't honestly say that I think the character was really in love with Presley. And Cheyenne? I wish that character would simply disappear with her sanctimonious attitude. Dylan definitely deserved better.
Coming home can mean something different to everyone. For some it is returning to a town, others it is family, and others is it that certain someone that you never got over. For very few it is a combination of all three. And for fewer still does it work out. For Presley, she has never been one of the lucky ones. Her life up until this point has been a one pitfall after another, but she has finally gotten her life together. She is clean and sober, has a son she adores, and a promising career in the making. But coming home again was a dream. A dream she wanted for her son, her sister and for herself. But being home has its problems as well. The one man who has always had a stronger hold on her than any drug is still in town. But she can’t be that girl any more, she can’t take that risk. She has her son, her heart and her secret to protect, and she has worked far too hard to get this second chance at life. And if there is anything that she has learned through it all, it’s that if you don’t take care of yourself, no one else will. But the hold that Aaron has on her turns out to be more than she can defend against. Aaron knows that he needs a change, so he is not entirely sure what he is doing with someone from his past. But if change is what he is looking for, Presley is one of the best changes he has ever witnessed. He just can’t seem to help himself! But what will happen when Aaron finds out Presley’s secret, and how can she protect her heart and her son through it all.

I hated this book. The characters were selfish and the betrayal was too deep. I won't be reading further. I went from liking this author to wondering what was going on step by step with each progressive book and this installment was basically the last straw.
I mean a loving wife deceives her husband by buying a home insemination kit so she can have his brothers sperm implanted? lol behind her husbands back? Just to have a baby? This us not something I would of expected from the characters and honestly? I won't bother to continue.
