Let's put this Arnold movie into perspective
Verified purchase
Arnold was around 37/38 years old when he made "Commando". He was coming off two Conan movies, The Terminator and Red Sonja ( which he was basically another Conan type character ).

Arnold went from being just a muscle man who broke bones and muttered a handful of short sentences in those previous films into a charismatic, comedic, lovable, leading man hero type. "Commando" was Arnold's rocket ship that launched him into the next 10 years as a legit "Action Film Star".

In no way am I disrespecting "The Terminator". It was an awesome movie by it's own right, but, it didn't entirely showcase that Schwarzenegger charm.

"Commando" was Arnold's explosive coming out movie to the world. This is the movie you gotta see to understand how Arnold became Arnold.

You really need a review? Its Commando!

Its Commando, if you've seen it, you love it. Awesome action movie and the feel good hero movie we love. Man just wants to live his life with his daughter. We dont know what happened to the mom, but they are making it. Then they take his daughter from him. I mean really? You're gonna take his daughter? And expect him to do the bad mission instead of rescuing his daughter? I'm not gonna tell you that he saves his daughter, gets the girl, and saves the day, because I dont want to give away the ending. But you want some quality one line zingers, real old school action, and have zero regrets about your purchase, buy this movie.

problems with Prime

There are two movies so far whereby I felt that Prime video could have made things more clear. For example in the case of Commando, I would have liked very much to know prior to my purchasing it that there was an available directors cut of the movie. I found out after the fact and purchased the directors cut. In effect I bought the movie twice when I only would have purchased the one version. I hope that Prime vide will find a way to make the existence of other video options more clear to the buying public and If anyone there at Amazon could see their way to removing this version of commando from my library and refunding me the money I would be most grateful.

Intense battle scenes, hand to hand combat, and a fight against the odds. Classic Arnold.

Awesome action movie. Great scenes, characters, plot and some Arnold style quotes. The main character, a retired military special operations commando, has to rescue his daughter from enemy forces who try to use kidnapping/extortion. The movie demonstrates the value of high power rifles, shotguns, high tech equipment, and physical strength and stamina, and in true Hollywood fashion, the advantage goes to the stronger and more talented, not the force that merely has larger numbers. 1980s action movies are generally very good. The genre continues to improve by becoming more diverse and specialized, with action/adventure mixing with either sci-fi or fantasy.

The first shot we see of Arnold in this movie is his massive bicep carrying a fallen tree. Among all his movies, this one has Arnold's highest body count, and maybe his best one-liners. It's like an '80s action movie that somehow feels like an homage to '80s action movies. If you like Arnold, this one belongs in your collection--it's essential, and perfect when you need to "blow off some steam."

Story is a dud No reason to care about it at all

Commando was a disappointing Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. An ex-dictator Arius (Dan Hedaya) has Schwarzenegger’s daughter played by Alyssa Milano kidnapped to force him to help him get his government back. Instead, the big guy decides to get revenge. The problem is Arius is a horrible villain. Without a good bad guy you can’t drive a story like this because the audience won’t care about what his does and his evil plans. Schwarzenegger gets to do his usual muscle bound rampage beating guys up and shooting the rest, but again, there is no reason to care about this story at all.

Commando is peak Schwarzenegger

Commando is way over the top it doesn't exactly live in reality.... but it's a load of fun that shouldn't be missed. In fact, I'd say it's even more enjoyable than other beloved Arnie flicks like Terminator and T2: Judgement Day. Arnie and Rae Dawn Chong make a surprisingly great team throughout the movie. On top of all the action, Arnie manages to throw in some comedy with some fun one liners like "Don't disturb my friend. He's dead tired," uttered shortly after killing a man. The Blu-Ray looks and sounds good for a 30+ year old movie, but the lack of extras beyond a trailer is disappointing. Still highly recommended on the strength of the film and a bargain price.

There sure are a lot of good lines in this movie that can be repeated ad nauseum to your friends for weeks following a viewing of this classic action film. If you really love paper thin plots, super unrealistic videogame-worthy shootouts and a near total lack of even the illusion of acting talent, then this movie is a must view for you. Don't get me wring, I liked this movie in the 80s and I like it still today, but I question if anyone that doesn't have a nostalgic background with this film would find it as funny and amusing as I do.
I know that this is a classic action film that was one of only a few that really defined this genre thirty years ago, but I just couldn't give it all 5 stars. It is pretty bad. . . .
