5.0 out of 5 starsThe better the knowledge on Koine Greek the better the advantage
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2016
This is not any book is really a handbook and a workbook. It is a tool for working on exegesis and intertextuality. It should be used paired with G. K. Beale, Handbook on the New Testament use of the Old Testament and keep handy Stanley E. Porter, Linguistic Analysis of the Greek New Testament: Studies in Tools, Methods and Practice. I teach biblical Hermeneutics at under and graduated level and i have welcomed this tool into my digital library. This is not for reading in a hurry; the reader must take time to read it carefully and ponder its contributions. With 1281 pages of quality exegetical work is a tool to use and come back for consultation once and again. The reader will need at least a basic knowledge of NT Greek and exegesis to take advantage of this tool. The better the knowledge on Koine Greek the better the advantage.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat Info... UPDATED - kindle version is terrible
Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2015
Really Great information. The only complaint i have is on the kindle edition, it would be so so helpful if they books of the bible were broken out by chapters in an index format so that i could skip straight to the chapter. Kind of a HUGE pain to have to turn page by page to get to what i'm looking for. For example, If i'm studying Luke 15, I could click on the Luke link and it takes me to Lk 1. From there i have to swipe until I get to chapter 15. Very inconvenient. The information in this book is Gold. Love it. Thanks!

*UPDATE*
Although I think this is an awesome book, the Kindle version is atrocious. It is separated by books of the New Testament but once you click on a book, for example John, navigating is the worst! Say you want to read John 16, get ready to throw in flip your finger for a long time. Please update the Kindle book to use recently released features from Amazon. Or please update and include chapters so that way we could get to the section we need to get to without spending 20 minutes scrolling. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A way to connect the testaments while preserving the inerrancy of scripture

If you have read the bible and have wondered how a passage in the New Testament is seemingly reinterpreting a quote from the old, knowing that the meaning old is not exsctly represented, this heavy tome is for you. The writers examine EVERY quote from the Old Testament in the NT and examines them from a historical redemptive perspective. Thoroughly acamedic, conservative, evangelical and faithul to the inerrancy of scripture, it traces the historical development of each quotation from the Old Testament, through the Jewish writers of the intertestamental period like the Qumram, Midrash, and hundreds of commentaries of the time period. THOUGH NOT CANONICAL, they offer light into the heurmenutical environment of theNew Testament writers. This helps us understand how these NT writers came to interpret the OT. This is not the kind of book you read through. You use this as you study through the NT. It is not an exhaustive commentary of the NT. You'll need to refer to trusted exegetes for each book. But this book does answer the questions rather well on what it porports itself to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pastoral Use of Beale's and Carson's Commentary
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2012

This book was properly NOT entitled "Commentary on the New Testament Exegesis of the Old Testament." It is a well studied and scholarly look at how the New Testament writers made USE of the Old Testament Scriptures. And they did make use of those Scriptures is varied and instructive ways.

Beale and Carson have compiled and edited articles from numerous trustworthy believing scholars which explain where, how, and why specific passages of Old Testament texts were employed by NT authors. These articles are careful to cite OT and NT contexts, predominant Middle Eastern scholastic thought prior to the 1st Century, and provide an analysis of what style was likely being used by the NT author (for example: typology, compare / contrast, poetic / emotive, prophetic fulfillment, simile, and at times even exegetical / interpretive).

Such varied approaches by the NT authors to acquiring and working with OT passages begs the question of whether we ought to handle the OT in the same manner as did they. This commentary fairly well states that the answer is, "Yes...but." Yes, if we were to be as careful as they in understanding that we are not always merely quoting and interpreting the OT nor making absurd allegories of the OT texts but using them as instructive examples, poetic bursts of emotion, and historical typographic illustrations then we should indeed use the OT in the same way.

Often the articles and entries in the commentary are long. This is not a dictionary and does not lend itself to quick reference lookups. Such attention to detail and depth enhances the experience of using this volume as it unearths elements and aspects of the Old Testament references that we rarely attempt to see from a 1st Century perspective today.

Its overall format is rather straightforward. Identify a NT passage and look it up in the commentary in the passage's traditional Protestant biblical order. Generally only OT passages that are directly quoted, paraphrased, alluded to, or cited by the NT are expanded upon in the commentary. If an OT passage is merely somewhat similar to or has only surface resemblances with an OT passage (giving one the feeling that it is being brought to mind for evocative or emotive reasons alone) then the commentary may not touch on it.

In general this is a very useful collection of articles. Its heart is not on being a commentary on the entire New Testament but is focused most narrowly on how the New Testament writers put the Old Testament to work to illustrate Jesus as the Christ, the evils of rebellion and sin, and the complex intricacies of God's epic sweeping salvific plan for humanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Whole Counsel of God

At a recent gathering of pastors from across the USA and Canada I was surprised that one VERY well-known speaker from So. California spoke to the pastors about his preaching style, his study habits, and his commentaries. When asked about his lack of preaching from Old Testament books, this pastor noted that he is a New Testament pastor and in his 25+ years has never preached through an Old Testament book, that the era of the Old Testament has no place in New Testament kingdom work. There was a hush like I had never heard (and these are all pastors who love to talk!). This new volume is a fantastic addition to any pastor's library and helps to link the entire counsel of God. Beale and Carson have given us a tremendous gift in the unique style of this reference book and how they build all the New Testament upon the shoulders of those prophets, priests, and sages who had gone before.

As we have seen, the New Testament is replete with uses of the Old Testament. Jesus, himself, was often quoting the Old Testament and the authors show us how the knowledge, culture, and genre of Old Testament books and passages that were useful in the establishment of the church after the resurrection. The authors are quick to remind us that the authors of the New Testament Canon were using Old Testament text to establish the church and then included God's counsel from the ancient eras in their writings back to the churches at Rome, Ephesus, and more.

This book serves a very powerful niche in our sermon preparation, it gives us tools to excite our congregation about the Old Testament which seems so ancient and almost out of place to the 21st Century thinker. Beale and Carson give us the tools to energize a new generation of disciples. I cannot imagine our pastoral libraries without this new work. It serves us as pastors and it serves our congregation as it illuminates the whole counsel of God.

A great book that should be read by all. Beale's scholarship is epic! His Revelation commentaries, long and short should be read by all and could ignite reformation, deliverance from the dead church cartels ruining America and lead to new, real churches that believe and teach the Bible and see salvation of souls, transformed lives and a restored culture of life and unity and hope!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for any student of the Bible

This book is a great resource for any person interested in the deeper study of the Bible - both Old and New Testaments. The material is scholarly and yet very easy to read and understand. There is some reference to the original language, but it does not require a knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to understand the material. Each book/letter of the New Testament begins with a very good introduction to its specific purpose in being written, with an emphasis on the links to the Old Testament Scriptures. Major themes are presented that help the reader gain greater insight into overall thrust of the message of the book/letter.
For those who desire to dig deeper, there are many references to other Jewish commentaries and writings, as well as an extensive bibliography and the end of each article.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!

I just got this book and I'm already impressed. The book is over 1200 pages of solid, scholarly output.

From Matthew through Revelation are treatments of quotations, echoes and allusions from the OT.

At the end of each NT book is a bibliography of the sources cited along the way. A great help!

The scholars are not afraid to give their own translation of the Greek text, while consulting other reliable versions of the Bible. I find this extremely helpful, as one who is adept at NT Greek.

DA Carson puts his scholarly touch on most of the Catholic Letters. He is so good.

Overall, this volume represents the best of NT scholarship. If you don't have this book in your collection and not making the most of it, you're depriving yourself of the best treatment to date on this subject, the use of the OT in the NT.

I give 10 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars I will turn to this time and time again.

I was excited to learn about and subsequently purchase this book. It sits on a shelf within easy reach and I turn to it every time my studies in the New Testament bring me to a passage where the author quotes the Old Testament. The New Testaments use of the Old is not always easy to understand. Does the context of the original author parallel or differ from the use by the NT author? Is he using the text to make a new point or does it point back to the direct meaning of the original? Does the NT author have one passage in mind or is he compiling passages? Is he quoting the Hebrew text, the Septuagint or can we not even know? Knowing how the New Testament authors used the Old Testament helps us understand both better, and this is a great tool for helping the Bible student understand that usage. Put this book on your shelf!

This is an incredible resource that looks at New Testament passages in their relation to the Old Testament. The authors go well beyond mere cross referencing and provide in-depth exegetical commentary on the New Testament and the Old Testament contexts. The writers adeptly address specific and general references by the New Testament to the Old Testament.

The authors of the chapters of the book are seasoned Biblical writers that incorporate the best from existing commentaries on their subjects in addition to offering their own profound insights. This is a rich resources that is simple, cogent, well written and easy to read. Each chapter has extensive bibliographies indicating the thoroughness of the research.

This is a resource book to definitely add to your library for personal devotional use, a writing resource or a preaching resource. I am very pleased with it so far.
