5.0 out of 5 starsThe better the knowledge on Koine Greek the better the advantage
Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2016
This is not any book is really a handbook and a workbook. It is a tool for working on exegesis and intertextuality. It should be used paired with G. K. Beale, Handbook on the New Testament use of the Old Testament and keep handy Stanley E. Porter, Linguistic Analysis of the Greek New Testament: Studies in Tools, Methods and Practice. I teach biblical Hermeneutics at under and graduated level and i have welcomed this tool into my digital library. This is not for reading in a hurry; the reader must take time to read it carefully and ponder its contributions. With 1281 pages of quality exegetical work is a tool to use and come back for consultation once and again. The reader will need at least a basic knowledge of NT Greek and exegesis to take advantage of this tool. The better the knowledge on Koine Greek the better the advantage.

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat Info... UPDATED - kindle version is terrible
Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2015
Really Great information. The only complaint i have is on the kindle edition, it would be so so helpful if they books of the bible were broken out by chapters in an index format so that i could skip straight to the chapter. Kind of a HUGE pain to have to turn page by page to get to what i'm looking for. For example, If i'm studying Luke 15, I could click on the Luke link and it takes me to Lk 1. From there i have to swipe until I get to chapter 15. Very inconvenient. The information in this book is Gold. Love it. Thanks!

*UPDATE*
Although I think this is an awesome book, the Kindle version is atrocious. It is separated by books of the New Testament but once you click on a book, for example John, navigating is the worst! Say you want to read John 16, get ready to throw in flip your finger for a long time. Please update the Kindle book to use recently released features from Amazon. Or please update and include chapters so that way we could get to the section we need to get to without spending 20 minutes scrolling. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A way to connect the testaments while preserving the inerrancy of scripture

If you have read the bible and have wondered how a passage in the New Testament is seemingly reinterpreting a quote from the old, knowing that the meaning old is not exsctly represented, this heavy tome is for you. The writers examine EVERY quote from the Old Testament in the NT and examines them from a historical redemptive perspective. Thoroughly acamedic, conservative, evangelical and faithul to the inerrancy of scripture, it traces the historical development of each quotation from the Old Testament, through the Jewish writers of the intertestamental period like the Qumram, Midrash, and hundreds of commentaries of the time period. THOUGH NOT CANONICAL, they offer light into the heurmenutical environment of theNew Testament writers. This helps us understand how these NT writers came to interpret the OT. This is not the kind of book you read through. You use this as you study through the NT. It is not an exhaustive commentary of the NT. You'll need to refer to trusted exegetes for each book. But this book does answer the questions rather well on what it porports itself to do.

A great book that should be read by all. Beale's scholarship is epic! His Revelation commentaries, long and short should be read by all and could ignite reformation, deliverance from the dead church cartels ruining America and lead to new, real churches that believe and teach the Bible and see salvation of souls, transformed lives and a restored culture of life and unity and hope!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for any student of the Bible

This book is a great resource for any person interested in the deeper study of the Bible - both Old and New Testaments. The material is scholarly and yet very easy to read and understand. There is some reference to the original language, but it does not require a knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to understand the material. Each book/letter of the New Testament begins with a very good introduction to its specific purpose in being written, with an emphasis on the links to the Old Testament Scriptures. Major themes are presented that help the reader gain greater insight into overall thrust of the message of the book/letter.
For those who desire to dig deeper, there are many references to other Jewish commentaries and writings, as well as an extensive bibliography and the end of each article.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!

I just got this book and I'm already impressed. The book is over 1200 pages of solid, scholarly output.

From Matthew through Revelation are treatments of quotations, echoes and allusions from the OT.

At the end of each NT book is a bibliography of the sources cited along the way. A great help!

The scholars are not afraid to give their own translation of the Greek text, while consulting other reliable versions of the Bible. I find this extremely helpful, as one who is adept at NT Greek.

DA Carson puts his scholarly touch on most of the Catholic Letters. He is so good.

Overall, this volume represents the best of NT scholarship. If you don't have this book in your collection and not making the most of it, you're depriving yourself of the best treatment to date on this subject, the use of the OT in the NT.

I give 10 stars.

This is an incredible resource that looks at New Testament passages in their relation to the Old Testament. The authors go well beyond mere cross referencing and provide in-depth exegetical commentary on the New Testament and the Old Testament contexts. The writers adeptly address specific and general references by the New Testament to the Old Testament.

The authors of the chapters of the book are seasoned Biblical writers that incorporate the best from existing commentaries on their subjects in addition to offering their own profound insights. This is a rich resources that is simple, cogent, well written and easy to read. Each chapter has extensive bibliographies indicating the thoroughness of the research.

This is a resource book to definitely add to your library for personal devotional use, a writing resource or a preaching resource. I am very pleased with it so far.

Some books come and go... this book is a classic. Carson and Beale have created a masterpiece. Giving the reader THROUGH information on the Old Testament and it's relationship to the New Testament. The book is filled with nuggets the will deepen any preaching pastors sermons, and understanding to any seminary or bible college students papers and inform the advanced laymen's understanding of scripture. Stays on my desk and is not moving anywhere.
