How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsThe BEST so far.

By far the 2nd best book (book 1 being the best) Jan has written so far. Along with following T and C on their Ireland vacation, Cynthia reads an old journal while she is at the Lodge. The description says the journal is tedious. I found the journal absolutely spellbinding. To get a story inside of the story, brings to life Ireland in a way that you could not experience with a regular timeline. The characters are old to young, loving and kind, to hateful and murderous in their intent. Always, the Reverend Timothy brings grace into the circumstances of their lives. Get the book on Audible or CD so that you can follow it easier and actually hear their Irish accent. I could not follow the book, with so many characters, 2 timelines, and a story inside a story with irish words, until I heard it aloud. This made all the difference -to HEAR the Irish accents. So if you want a book about life in Ireland, about forgiveness, reconciliation, sacrifice and deep love, this is the one. I wish she would do another Fr. Tim book.

The two Father Tim books are a little darker than the other Mitford books. This one is set in Ireland where Father Tim and his wife find an old journal which they spend much of the time reading. There is a lot of back and forth between the present and far past (through the old journal), and I struggled a bit with all the names from past and all the names from the present. Many were strange names to me, probably old Gaelic names. In the Mitford series, I have always felt like I knew the characters, even felt excited to get into each new book so I could visit with my friends. In this book, I never really felt like I got to know any of them. I love, love, LOVE the Mitford books, and have re-read many of them, but this one is my least favorite. It was just ok for me.

Jan Karon has written a great series of books and this is one of the Mitford series. I have read all of this series now and will reread over and over in the years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read, but not Miss Read.

First, let me note that I am writing this while looking out the window of my home onto Lough Arrow, the setting of the book. It was fun reading a novel set in an area where I live, and recognising it and other locations. The houses in the book are a composite, but I think I know them in spirit. The credits and thank you notes at the end offer clues to locals. Lough Arrow is home to several writers and artists; there is a well-known photographer and a more famous poet. The locals do not use the "stage-Irish" manner of speech Ms Karon employs, sparingly, thank you. Father Tim would have heard little Irish spoken, but more understood (it is taught in grade school.)

In other words, it was familiar territory.

Generally, everything rang true with a few small caveats. There are no salmon in Lough Arrow. The lake waters rise from an unknown limestone source deep underground and flow to the river Unshin then to the ocean. Salmon have been known to swim to the bridge at Ballyrush, but no further. The lough (pronounced "lock" for the culturally inept) has mainly brown trout and pike, and on occasion eels.

There are swans, many other bird species, many wildflowers; mink are seen more frequently these days, a few badger and stoats. There are many cattle, horses, sheep and goats. This is farm country.

There are only two police officers at Riverstown; the detectives would have been called out from Ballymote. Taking fingerprint evidence might have been a first for them.

And for the baffled:

Garda "guard" is a collective noun, (like police); the Gardaí [Gar-dee]; "guards", plural); or the Guards.

An individual officer is also called a garda (plural gardaí), "officer" "Guard" is the most common form of address used by members of the public speaking to a garda on duty.

I think people who read the book and weren't able to follow the story should try it again and pay attention to the 1860 journal which Tim reads and which contains clues to the story.

This was my first Father Tim book. I found it enjoyable, but I'm not inclined to read another. For the country life genre I prefer Miss Read, though unfortunately she, at age 98, has no new books on offer.

And should you want to read more stories about Lough Arrow, I suggest "Barnacle Soup: And Other Stories from the West of Ireland " by Josie Gray, (978-1597660365) 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Father Tim Saga Continues

This book continues the Father Tim stories. As with other books about Father Tim, it is a combination of great story line with injections of amazing inspirational wisdom. While I miss Mitford and its residents, this book continues where "Home To Holly Springs" ends ... and is a treasure itself. If you are a Jan Karon fan [and by extension, a fan of Father Tim and Cynthia], you will enjoy this one.

I so enjoy all of the books by Jan Karon. I hope she will continue to write. These books are filled with such a wonderful feeling of home and community. I especially enjoy the books that are set in North Carolina, in the mountains and on the coast.

I am so glad I could complete my collection here. Many of us have hoped there would be one last novel....looks like there won't be. These is such a wonderful series that many of my friends, my sister and my mother and I have enjoyed.
