Simone, of the Torma shifters, thought she was finished with the world of supernaturals that existed outside of Earth. She’d been there, done that, and had the near death experience to show for her time.
Then a summons back to Valdor–the vampire world– is dropped in her lap.
Turns out that the last time she was there, her teeny tiny mistake sent out an energy burst that called to an ancient powerful master. A master who is looking for a mate and wants Simone to participate in the Selection to prove her worth. Attendance non-negotiable.
Lucky for her, she still has one ally up her sleeve: Lucien.
Okay, yeah, he’s a snarly, powerful, frustratingly perfect master himself, but at least she knows where she stands. Lucien agrees to enter himself as a master-looking-for-a-mate in the Selection so they can pretend to fall for each other.
Only, it’s never been that simple with Simone and Lucien, and all too soon the lines between pretend and real get very blurry. Especially when there’s feeding involved.
Simone now has more at stake than just her life... her heart is on the line.* This is a standalone in the Shadow Beast world, and does NOT end on a cliffhanger. It is full length at 110k words, and it is advised to read the first four in the Shadow Beast world first (Rejected, Reclaimed, Reborn, Deserted) to get the most enjoyment from the story. Not required though. This is an enemies to lovers story, with action, snark, anti-heroes, and steam. It is recommended for 18+ due to storyline and situations.

I really enjoyed this book, and it was probably my favourite of the series so far. I enjoyed that this Simone and Lucien’s relationship started out different than than the previous two couples, as they started out as allies, then friends, to lovers and eventually blood bonded mates. Whereas the other couples started out with so much hate and anger, that eventually turned into everything for them both. I’m glad it finally came out about what happened to Simone when she went to Valdor with Lucien the first time. She’d been compelled to never talk about it, and if she was able to break through their compulsion and talk about it, her punishment would be losing her life. Lucien tried to protect her while she was in Valdor, by telling her to stay inside his compound, as he knew that shifters would only be considered food, but Simone didn’t like being caged so she’d slowly bend the rules by going outside.
Simone ended up trusting the wrong vampire Grant a Level 2 master who wanted Lucien’s position. She went with him because Lucien trusted him and he took her into the Crimson City and basically talked her into touching their Sacred Stone of Katu and Simone’s penalty was death. The guard ripped her throat out but luckily Lucien tracked her down and saved her life in time, then kill both Grant and the guard that tried to kill Simone. Simone was then compelled to never be able to talk about what happened and to never step foot in Valdor again. She put a lot of the blame on Lucien, but it didn’t help that after Lucien gave her his blood to save her life, she kissed him. He tried to tell her gently that they couldn’t be together because his mate would be vampire, and vampires and shifters aren’t compatible. He’s also never wanted to find his blood call bonded mate, as his parents were blood call bonded and they only cared about each other and their needs, which resulted in both their deaths.
Simone received word that Mera is in labour so she needs to get to the library straight away. When she arrives Lucien tells her that she’s been summoned to Valdor by all the Level 1 masters, and Lucien has no idea what they want but will try and hold them off so Simone can at least stay until Mera has given birth. The new additions to their family of Mera and Shadow’s daughter and Angel and Reece’s son are both totally adorable but extremely powerful which isn’t a surprise considering who their parents are. Lucien isn’t happy at all that the vampires don’t trust him to bring Simone to Valdor and they basically send a lot of vampire bounty hunters to make sure that she comes to Valdor as demanded. Lucien isn’t happy that they ignored his wishes. Both Lucien and Simone are confused about why they’re doing this now after all this time?
When they arrive in Valdor, they find out that Carter the elusive lone vampire, felt drawn to the power blast that happened when Simone touched the Stone of Katu and therefore is planning to take his role as a Level 1 Master and wants Simone as a mate (he lost his first mate). so they’re making her to enter the mating selection otherwise she’ll be killed. Lucien tells them all that she needs time to think about things and they’ll be back tomorrow which they agree and head back to the library to discuss everything with their friends/chosen family. Lucien comes up with a plan that he’ll enter the mating selection so they can pretend that they eventually fall for each other, and then Simone can be given her freedom afterwards. I love that Lucien doesn’t take any sh*t when it comes to protecting Simone, his Bee. It doesn’t mean that he discounts her strength at all though, he shows this in the final battle. He just protects her back which a mate should do. Lucien brought his friend Len, to Valdor to protect Simone while she’s having to go through the mating selection. as he knows that she wont be able to stay with him since he’s entering it as well.
I loved how possessive Lucien is his his Bee. Their chemistry is completely off the charts, and hot as f*ck. The more blood Simone and Lucien share, the closer their bond becomes as well as changes Simone into a true hybrid of wolf and vampire. Who knew blood play could be so sexy? They start sharing more about their lives, and what shaped them into the people they’re today, the closer they become. There are dangers are around every corner, luckily she has Lucien and Len as her allies and friends. Man, I really wanted to punch that b*tch Hattie in the throat after what she did to Simone. She befriended her by saying all the right things, like she doesn’t even want to enter in the mating selection but since her family has minimal power she’s being forced to enter, and she’s actually in love with the guy next door. Len was wary of her motives but then when Simone was late to the breakfast, Len left to try and find her some food but Hattie told her that she saved her a plate. Simone didn’t even stop to think that the food could be poisoned as she was starving and needed to eat before the next trial.
Simone became extremely weak while doing the obstacle course portion of the trials, she got chronic tummy pains and was excessively vomiting. It took her a moment to realise that Hattie tried to kill her. Lucien was not happy when he found Simone and realised that she’d been poisoned. He was ruthless when he ripped Hattie’s head off for attempting to kill Simone. The only reason Simone survived is that she had fed from Lucien earlier before the trials, so Lucien’s fresh blood was running through her veins. Hattie had laced Simone’s breakfast with tatan root powder, which the vampires use to dilute blood, but if used in excess it will boil someone from the inside out which was Hattie’s plan. Lucien saves Simone’s life once again. I loved how Simone found her place in the world, and a family/pack that love, support and care about each other. Her parents were complete a*seholes, that didn’t deserve her. I’m really looking forward to reading Len and Sam’s story when it’s released, and I’m hoping that Galleli gets his own happily ever after, as I want to learn more about him. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.
Jaymin does it again. I really enjoy almost all of her books, and this series is one of my favorites. This is the fifth book in the shadow beast shifters series and follows Simone, a shifter and Mera’s (she is the main focus of the first 3 books) best friend. While Mera was off doing her own thing saving the world, Simone was sent to the Vampire realm, Valdor, for her own safety. In this book she is facing some repercussions of what she did while staying there, while also trying very hard not to love Lucien, a Vampire who has vowed never to love. While a bit tropey I do love Simone and the story moves pretty fast. The spice is good and all in all I just find Jaymin’s characters really fun and relatable.
It is similar to the other books in the series and features to the two main characters. I like it well enough.
If you are already a fan of Jaymin as an author and have already read her other books, obviously I recommend this book to you. If you love fantasy romance I would start with the first book in the series as this has some spoilers for things that have happened in them.
We finally find out what went down with lucien and Simone and it’s a doozy!! The tension between these 2 characters is soooo fire! Couldn’t stop turning the page!
Love love love this book! Must read! You don’t have read the prior books in this series before reading this but I would highly recommend it! Not only because they are great reads but you get more background on these characters…

Jaymin Eve has created a magical world filled with beautifully imagined worlds that you can enter via a door in a dream come true library. The world we visit in compelled is Valdor, where Vampires dwell.
Simone beautiful and strong main female character has to face the fall out from her previous visit to Valdor. An incident she has not been able to talk about with her friends.
Lucien handsome, somewhat broken, and possessive vampire, the main male character has to escort Simone to Valdor to ensure her safety and ascertain why the masters want her now after all this time.
This is how the main characters end up in mate selection progress. (Think bacholerette) Lucien has to face all the feelings he has been hiding and running from. Simone has guarded her heart as Lucien might just break her. Emotional upheaval isn't enough. Simone faces trails and turbulation, with a true princess moment that brought fun to an angst driven plot. A truly magnificent written story that keeps you reading. Unputdownable.
Found family trope with tender moments to bring smiles and flutter of the heart. Slow burn between friends that turn into hot, steamy sexy time, which developed into fated mates.
Enjoyable read, and I am truly happy I read this book. No cringing, no WTF moment, absolute joy. It had me laughing, crying, and biting my nails in angst. Characters are likeable and swoonworthy. The plot was strong and carried well. I just wish I could articulate how excellent Compelled truly is to read. I want to reread it just to be with all characters again. It's like visiting old friends. They engulf you in a rib crushing hug that soothes your soul. Highly recommended.
and there's plenty of action while filling in all those gaps I'd been desperate to know about..I loved taking that journey with them and discovering more about them both.. Oh and of course there's the classic steamy scenes you'd come to expect with Jaymin and this story arc 😍👌🏻
This is one of my favourite story arcs and I'll be sure to read it several time more just like the others!
