This book is a well written inclusion in the trilogy by Sugawara Sadamoto.
Not just for martial arts historians.
This volume is concentrated on Tai Sabaki and should be studied by any student of martial arts.

Great look at classical Japanese martial traditions!

This is another one of Mr. Shahan's translation works, and it lives up to the quality which I've come to expect from his works. The book which he's translating is a pretty interesting one- it reads like what one would expect a 'densho' (lineage transmission scroll) to read like. A lot of the techniques described, even with the included illustrations, are difficult to describe and end up being rather vague. Mr. Shahan's footnotes in the work fall into one of three categories: either he's elucidating something from the text which helps you to understand the technique better, explaining the usage of an obscure and difficult-to-translate Japanese term, or he's just writing something silly to make you laugh. I'll be honest- it's really the third category of footnotes that I enjoy the most. A couple of times I spit coffee through my nose and farted (because I read on the toilet when having my morning coffee) when reading this book.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in classical Japanese martial arts. For students of Gendai budo such as Judo, Karate, etc. it will be a fascinating glimpse into how Japanese martial arts were historically transmitted and practiced. For students of Kobudo, a lot of the techniques and descriptions will seem familiar yet interesting. I'm not sure if it's a specific ryuha which the author is writing about, but it certainly is an interesting read.

It's pretty decent. The translator have a bit of a casual tone, and some of the sources are just Wikipedia and blogs, but otherwise pretty good. Too bad Sugawara seems to be a bit dull witted, as he makes many mistakes both in writing and illustration, some of which even the translator felt like pointing out. These are by no means complex Jujutsu techniques, but the illustrations are sparse, and as we saw in the first volume, Sugawara doesn't like drawing, often leaving out quite essential and complex details that definitely should have clearer illustrations. You're left to guess what happens in between illustrations.

Having said all of this, I still recommend it for those who have a historical interest, as these are historical texts. I can appreciate them as of historical value, but as an experienced swordsman and martial artist, I still would have a hard time trying to follow the instructions in this book.
