Anyway, read this book. Understand France as it was before and after the "French Revolution" of 1789. And understand why Napoleon disliked Tallyrand, but could not do without him.

Le personnage de Talleyrand est ultra connu, mais ses mémoires n'ont pu être publiées que 50 ans après sa mort, après un imbroglio avec ses légataires. Et elles furent jugées comme très décevantes, tant le personnage et son aura sulfureuse stimulaient encore l’imagination de l’intelligentsia parisienne de l’époque.
Ces confessions donnent donc une vision prévisible du personnage. Intelligent, manipulateur, cynique, corrompu. Mais finalement cette version le rend sympathique parce qu'il ne dissimule rien. C’est en Dom Juan politique proche de tous les pouvoirs pendant 50 ans dans la période la plus troublée de notre histoire que Talleyrand est présenté. Il se moque de tout le monde y compris de lui-même, et est donc très loin du tartuffe que certains pourraient imaginer.
Ces fausses confessions d’un acteur exceptionnel de la comédie humaine en deviennent donc une très agréable distraction historique que je vous recommande.
