I first read this book back in the 1970s when I was in the US Air Force stationed overseas. I was in an extremely boring job and I had a lot of time on my hands. I tripped over this book in the base library and was absolutely astonished as I read it! Here was a scion of "Le Ancien Regime" who not only thrived after the revolution of 1789, but, who even survived the ultimate fall of Napoleon. A man who truly defined both corruption and political survival. (He was even a consecrated, but fallen, Bishop, a true Prince of the Catholic Church!) Astonishingly enough, I was introduced to this gentleman (albeit never his name) in grade school in a 1950s civics and American History class when the "XYZ affair" was discussed. Then 20 years later, I learned that MR. Tallyrand was the employer of MSRs. X, Y, & Z! Shame on my brain-dead civics books and teachers for not explaining the (extremely significant) back story. Oh well, our current civics classes are even worse. One final note: Mr. Tallyrand absolutely deplored, and spoke against, the French invasion, capture, and colonization of Algeria. A century and a half later, the Algerian war of independence was a bitter pill for France to swallow. The truly amazing thing about Mr. Tallyrand is how someone who was so institutionally corrupt could have so much insight into the true path that France should have taken during his lifetime and how many times France went the OTHER way to its ultimate detriment.
Anyway, read this book. Understand France as it was before and after the "French Revolution" of 1789. And understand why Napoleon disliked Tallyrand, but could not do without him.
