This book arrived after doing research and talking to several psychologists after a life-changing event. I had never heard of Sam Vaknin.

Let me tell you, after the week that I’ve endured from discovering 3.5 years of lies, deceit & manipulation from a woman that I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with... this book opened my eyes into the monster she is.

Sam’s a monstrous gift to the world. I say that with tremendous respect. You know that old analogy about the frog sitting in a pot of water on a stove, gradually increasing the heat and cooking itself to death...

If you believe you’re being lied to.. manipulated, or psychologically tormented by a partner— read Sam’s book. Because you will learn from it and that stove crank to high heat—- and you will jump out of the pot long before you get to the point I did.

This book was the most in depth read on the narcissist’s psyche I’ve ever experienced. I’ve been in 3 romantic entanglements with narcissists for a total of 14 years, my mother is a narcissist and many of my friends were as well before I learned about NPD. This book explained nuances of the dynamic that I would have never realized. No one goes as deep as Sam Vaknin on this topic. A narcissist willing to let the world see what he is and to help us understand why...is a rare thing indeed and I am grateful for it. Knowing what has happened to me, I shudder to think what my life would be like without this information. I listen to Sam in moments of weakness, when I miss the narcissists in my life. He quickly reminds me of why I left and that breaking No Contact would probably destroy me.

This is a great book to read if you work with, live with, or have fallen in love with a Narcissist. It contains first person insights into what it feels like to have NPD and it makes it easier to understand underlying truths of the disorder from the inside out. It's easy to feel that narcissists are inherently evil because they are capable of causing so much pain and damage.. This book helps you understand that those with this illness are fragile. They are often angry, often afraid, often sad and managing their emotions, their self esteem, their identity is a full time job. If you love someone with the disorder it is very tempting to believe that one can, through loving them, heal the many injuries that caused the disorder. This book helps you understand why treating people with this disease is something that can only be undertaken by professionals. If you find someone with this disorder baffling and aggravating, this book may provide some level of relief by providing some level of understanding.

Highly recommended for everyone who values learning from experience and learning again. Sam cannot run away from himself. It is an excellent example of how the human spirit endures, and not only survives... but thrives.

Sam Vaknin reclaims his gift to help others recognize and commit to an easier life, a more positive and productive life... while healing his own narcissistic personality.

A man who hit rock bottom and found the grace to pick himself up and be a compassionate human being. Especially forgiving of himself and his own ruthless self-awareness.
