HIS PREJUDICE.
THEIR PASSION.
As headstrong as she is beautiful, Lady Cassandra Vernham defied convention when she refused to marry the man who had compromised her. Now, estranged from her family, Cassandra struggles to make ends meet. A recent auction of her jewels has brought her a modicum of relief, but one of the most valuable lots was never paid for by the highest bidder: handsome, rakish Viscount Ambury. Cassandra needs that money badly, and not to buy a new hat.
Ambury has only to look at Cassandra to begin imagining her in his bed… He has not settled that outstanding debt for a reason. He suspects that the expensive baubles were stolen, perhaps even by Cassandra herself. Erotic fantasies about her notwithstanding, the vixen is not to be trusted, for she has already destroyed his good friend—the man she refused to marry who later lost his life in a duel, which Ambury suspects was fought over Cassandra. But nothing is as it seems…
As the seductive lord and the scandalous beauty are drawn together, the passion that flares between them will illuminate shocking secrets that will change both their lives forever…

Review
"RITA Award–winning Hunter follows The Surrender of Miss Fairborne (2012) with another stellar Regency-set historical romance that hits all the literary marks. Hunter’s effortlessly elegant writing exudes a wicked sense of wit; her characterization is superbly subtle, and the sexual chemistry she cooks up between her deliciously independent heroine and delightfully sexy hero is pure passion." --Booklist (starred review)
"Intelligent and memorable... [The Conquest of Lady Cassandra] is as smart and sharp as the best of Regency romances can be. With its tangy dialogue, Pride and Prejudice themes, bits of mystery and nefarious characters, readers may be reminded of Jane Austen." --Romantic Times (Top Pick)
Praise for the novels of Madeline Hunter:
“Hunter’s books are so addictive.”—Publishers Weekly
"Richly spiced with wicked wit and masterfully threaded with danger and desire, the superbly sexy first book in Hunter’s new Regency historical quartet is irresistible and wonderfully entertaining."—Booklist (starred review)
“Hunter's flowery centerpiece will suit every romance table. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal
“Hunter gifts readers with a fantastic story that reaches into the heart of relationships and allows her to deliver a deep-sigh read.”—RT Book Reviews

About the author

I am a published novelist, a mother and wife, an art historian and a teacher. My first historical romance was published in 2000 and my bibliography shows the list of books since then. My books have been on the bestseller lists of the New York Times, USAToday, and Publishers Weekly (where I have also had three starred reviews.) I have won the RITA award twice and been a finalist seven times. My novels combine strong romances between layered and complex characters with plots that include mysteries or intrigues.

Yates, Lord Amsbury, a close friend of Southwaite the husband of Emma, was introduced as Cassandra was in the last book. His character is of a man with deep loyalties to his friends and a love for his parents despite past conflicts. As his father slowly dies Yates returns to learn his duties as the Earl but to also solve the mystery of stolen/lost earrings. This is what leads him to Cassandra and is one of the themes of the story.
These two characters have history and a strong attraction. Hunter doesn't just make this a simple love story but a journey in trust, honesty and friendship. Both are fiercely committed to present and past friends. But each have the ability to not blindly and irrationally cling to assumptions. In the end as they are able to let down their walls a true and real relationship is founded.
Hunter never makes any of her character anything but real. I read this story knowing that there would be no tricks. There are surprises and I discovered that what I thought would happen didn't but the plot flowed evenly.
Throughout the book there are previews of who will be prominent in the next books. Penhurst and Lydia, Renfeld and maybe Marielle. I like that. The next book can't come out soon enough for me. A wonderful series.
Ms. Hunter brings them together in a story and a mystery that keeps you guessing to the end, and perhaps beyond.
You will fall in love with both Yates and Cassandra. They belong together, the reader knows it... they however take a much longer time to figure it out. Fortunately it is a wonderful ride all the way to the end.
Ms. Hunter never fails to entertain, and you always end the story with a sigh, one that says, how wonderful, but I am sorry it is over.
In case you are wondering the erotic scenes are there, and just as well written.
One little warning, and it may just be me. Ms. Hunter has her own style of writing, and sometimes when I began reading I am a little confused as to who is talking. However, it always falls into place and I am once again lost in the story by this great author.
It is a don't miss read if you love historical romance.
