About the authors
Stanislav Grof, M.D., PhD., is a psychiatrist with over sixty years of experience in research of non-ordinary states of consciousness and one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology. He was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where he also received his scientific training: an M.D. degree from the Charles University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. degree (Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine) from the Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences. He was also granted honorary Ph.D. degrees from the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA, and the World Buddhist University in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2018 he received an honorary Ph.D. degree for Psychedelic Therapy and Healing Arts from the Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, California.
Peter Russell is an author, speaker, and leading thinker on consciousness and contemporary spirituality. He believes the critical challenge today is freeing human thinking from the limited beliefs and attitudes that lie behind many of our problems — personal, social, and global. His mission is to distill the essential wisdom on human consciousness found in the world’s various spiritual traditions and to disseminate it in contemporary and compelling ways. Russell earned a first-class honors degree in theoretical physics and psychology — as well as a master’s degree in computer science — at the University of Cambridge, England. He also studied meditation and Eastern philosophy in India. He coined the term global brain with his 1980s bestseller by the same name in which he predicted the internet and the impact it would have on humanity.
Ervin Laszlo, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, is editor of the international periodical World Futures: The Journal of General Evolution and Chancellor-Designate of the newly formed GlobalShift University. He is the founder and president of the international think tanks the Club of Budapest and the General Evolution Research Group and the author of 83 books translated into 21 languages. He lives in Italy.

The discussions were intense and wide-ranging but held in tranquil surroundings in the homes of the authors in California. In the words of Ervin Laszlo, who acted as editor for the volume, they wanted `to reflect on the chances of peace in the world [but] ended up talking about crisis, transformation, goals and values, worldviews, understanding ourselves and others, art, science, religion, and spirituality'; and the central issue: `Can we change and evolve our consciousness so as to transcend the current crisis-prone world?'
From the scope of these discussions it will be obvious that this is a difficult book to review. On each subject, the participants contributed their own viewpoint and the dialogue went back and forth, on and around each topic, gradually evolving into the next issue. Despite the fact that the subject matter is therefore rather diffuse, they try to address how each person can put his or her own life in greater alignment with the groundswell developing in global spiritual consciousness. Nothing less than a positive contribution from a majority of people on the planet, and especially those most concerned with its destruction - politicians, industrialists and bankers - can bring this embryonic movement to fruition. As Ken Wilber, who contributed the Foreword to the book, says: this is `an extraordinary discussion among three of the very finest minds of our time'.
