I most often read, and write, adventure tales set in exotic, end-of-the-earth locales, so it is refreshing to find something set practically in my own backyard. David Wood has done an excellent job of weaving together several Southern California legends along with its natural history, and slipping in an environmental message about the Salton Sea in the process. While the main plot at first seemed a bit predictable, there are clever twists and turns I didn't see coming that threw my preconceptions off track. Well done! There are a few small typos that don't detract from the reading. Still, sharper eyes pre-publication would have been beneficial. But with a great blend of adventure, mystery, and the kind of action, suspense and humor we've come to expect from Dane and Bones, Contest is a winner.

If you enjoy a good treasure hunt, some action and adventure, with some top-notch mystery woven in to keep you flipping pages, you will enjoy David Wood's book Contest. I'm a big fan of the Dane Maddox, "Bones' series and this book did not disappoint me. This was a bit different from the others but still included the usual humor and adventure you would expect from Wood. Even if you have never read the other books in the series, Contest can stand alone.

A fun and entertaining book that will keep you reading well into the night.

I must have missed something all the reviewers have written thus far. 25% complete and I am lost. I dumped the book as there is no story. Somehow I have missed the connection of treasure hunting and a bunch of lame games. That is two in a row I have not liked.

Another great Maddock and Bones adventure. This one involves treasure hunting in the Salt on Sea. Has lots of mystery and history to it. It appears Maddock is finally over Angel with the new girl in his life named Spencer. This is another fun read that Maddock and Bones fans will love. Can't wait for the next one.

What a fun read! Lost treasure, the Black Dahlia serial killer, an abundance of reality 'stars', caverns, ships on the desert and a little magic. There are some laugh out loud lines. There is also a plea for help concerning the Salton Sea which could certainly use some attention. If you want a tale to just enjoy, this is the book. It is fun summer read.
